Engineering Director, Identity and Authentication (R6534)

As a Director of Engineering for Avalara’s Shared Services organization, you will lead teams of seasoned engineers responsible for the delivery, availability, and architecture of Avalara’s core technology platform with a focus in the Identity and Access Management domain.  You will be a thought leader in this space building opportunity to meet the needs of massive growth and a rapidly evolving business environment.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities 

The successful candidate should have experience leading teams running mission critical services at scale in a SaaS environment, robust client-server development experience, a proven ability to learn new approaches in emerging technologies, a high degree of intellectual curiosity, experience with multiple software development methodologies, excellent problem-solving skills, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.  

The primary responsibilities of this role include: 

  • Provide people, process, and hands-on technical leadership to multiple shared services engineering teams in the Identity and Access domain 
  • Remain at the forefront of industry best practices and experience with design, development, implementation, integration and support of Identity Access Management systems and services including provisioning, multi-factor authentication (MFA), Single Sign-On (SSO), access management, SAML & OAuth 
  • Be a champion of development best practices for the teams: design, architecture, performance, delivery, and quality 
  • Ensure that product architecture and technology decisions support business area strategies and future direction of product lines 
  • Mentor, motivate, and lead engineering teams to support a vibrant, inclusive, and productive engineering culture 
  • Actively engage in supporting Agile processes and Avalara’s SDLC 
  • Thrive on learning new technologies, don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions, and adapt easily to meet the needs of massive growth and a rapidly evolving business environment 

Qualifications 

  • Bachelors or higher degree in computer science or equivalent field 
  • 10+ years of experience working in software engineering with at least 5+ years of experience in a management/leadership role 
  • Experience leading high-performance engineering teams working on large-scale mission critical software services 
  • Experience working with Identity Access Management systems and services including provisioning, multi-factor authentication (MFA), Single Sign-On (SSO), access management, SAML & OAuth 
  • Development experience in multiple programming languages with a preference in C# 
  • Deployment automation experience 
  • Familiar with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS) 
  • Familiar with SQL and NoSQL database technologies (SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB) 
  • Cloud experience (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) 
  • Motivated to explore new opportunities in leading edge technologies 
  • Highly detail oriented and well organized 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
