Sr. Technical Product Manager - API Gateway (R4369)

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Sr. Technical Product Manager to join our team.

The Avalara Product Manager will work with Avalara's product teams to deliver API Gateway infrastructure for our Next Generation APIs that drive value to organizations of all sizes and solve the end-user needs across the complexity spectrum.


  • Lead your product area, providing vision, technical leadership, and mentorship for your team.
  • Author documents relating to product life cycle including product roadmap, business requirements, and functional specifications.
  • Drive product development across teams (primarily Engineering, Operations, Product Management, Business Development, and Marketing) through business requirements, design, implementation, and deployment.
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering as an advocate for the needs of our customers.
  • Evaluate industry innovations and technology platforms.
  • Work with the business development, account management, operations, and engineering teams to design, plan, and implement system integrations with partners and customers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 8+ years of industry experience with 5+ years of technical product management or program management experience, including defining and documenting functional specifications, system integrations, and control and data flows.
  • 5+ years experience developing software
  • 5+ years experience leading cross-functional software projects
  • Experience in leading product development from start to finish, including shipping customer-facing products.
  • Demonstrated solid judgment and effective communication skills. Ability to see the big picture, while navigating technology and partner development decisions and tradeoffs.
  • Experience as a product owner with the ability to drive prioritization consensus across business units and serve as an effective liaison between customers and engineering.
  • Expertise in SOAP and REST web services.
  • Expertise in API Gateway (preferably HAProxy).
  • Well-versed in agile methodologies and tools - including Confluence, Jira, Slack - and experience working in an agile/scrum environment.
  • Written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on communicating technical requirements and solutions to internal and external audiences.

Job Duties:

  • Develop product strategy for API gateway infrastructure to support globally scaled SaaS platform.
  • Manage the delivery of products, including PoC, internal Beta, external Beta, Public Launch, and ongoing releases.
  • Participate actively in product planning and roadmap definition.
  • Proactively work with internal and external customers to acquire a deep understanding of their requirements & business needs (e.g. other PMs, engineering, SaaS operations, business development, sales, marketing & customer success teams).
  • Research and write detailed product requirements including but not limited to user stories for engineering to execute against.
  • Write detailed API Gateway Infrastructure requirements, API Standards, and other relevant technical requirements.
  • Ensure that product requirements incorporate effective written and more creative, visual techniques (e.g. wireframes and mockups).
  • Develop and articulate a defensible point of view based on data from primary and secondary research including direct customer engagement, particularly for new tax vertical or product launch.
  • Ensure committed product delivery timelines are achieved across the organization including but not limited to engineering.
  • Define and analyze metrics that inform the success of products
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key decision-makers across the organization.
  • Work closely with our internal product teams to ensure that our APIs can be used to enable the required use cases and scenarios across the spectrum of products.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience building, adopting, and maintaining API Gateway, REST APIs, preferably for Enterprise products is a big plus!
  • Experience working for leading SaaS companies with a diverse customer base spanning small business owners, SMB, and enterprise
  • Experience gained within similar verticals – FinTech / FS, Tax, E-Commerce, or Accounting.
  • Relevant API Gateway certification.
  • Some experience of working at a startup would be advantageous.
