Principal UX Researcher

Avalara's Product Experience Group is looking for a Principal User Researcher who is passionate about understanding the needs, attitudes, and workflows of the people who use Avalara products. Our customers' goal is to ensure their businesses are tax compliant; as Avalara's User Research team, we seek to understand our users and to share compelling insights about their goals and priorities so that Avalara can deliver best-in-class experiences.

We're looking for someone who pairs a robust toolkit of research methods with leadership skills that can extend and broaden the work of our team. We handle a mix of evaluative and generative research projects, and are always looking for new and compelling ways to bring the user's perspective to our product teams. We coach product managers and others who seek to conduct their own research, and drive strategic cross-functional research projects across Avalara's product portfolio.

Responsibilities


  • Be an enthusiastic advocate for strategic research opportunities that help Avalara better understand user needs, emotions, and priorities based on product roadmaps and company goals

  • Help translate open-ended or ambiguous research requests into crisp research plans that shape our collective understanding of Avalara's multi-product, multi-vertical, multi-segment product landscape and how we can best serve our customers

  • Scope, schedule, plan, and execute research based on business needs; and deliver thoughtful, compelling research findings that accurately frame insights and deliver clear, actionable recommendations

  • Take teamwork seriously: partner with fellow researchers, UX peers, product managers, developers, marketing and other business-side colleagues, and senior leaders to deliver customer-centric offerings; champion integrating discovery and user research into roadmaps throughout the product life-cycle

  • Work independently or collaboratively, as projects require; demonstrate excellent judgment in ambiguous contexts; handle complex projects with minimal oversight

  • Work cross-functionally to drive continuous improvement efforts, coach interested product managers as they learn to conduct their own user research, provide training and coaching on discovery and validation methods, mentor junior team members, and help inspire UX and Product to better understand users' needs.

Minimum Qualifications


  • Master's degree in a User Experience related field such as Human-Computer Interaction, UX Design, Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors Psychology, or Behavioral Sciences; Anthropology; Psychology; Computer Science; or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years relevant user research experience, including 5 or more years experience working in a global SaaS company

  • Experience designing and implementing research programs including multi-stage discovery and validation efforts, leading major UX and Research initiatives, and working with research vendors

  • Expertise using a broad array of research methods; up-to-date frameworks for selecting the best method(s) and tool(s) for a given set of circumstances

  • Confidence working with quantitative data and conducting mixed-methods research: experience using product analytics tools; designing, fielding, and conducting analysis for surveys; and working with data science teams to mine other internal data sources

  • Experience independently delivering quality work on tight deadlines, and ability to concurrently manage multiple projects and stakeholders

  • Exceptionally clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to connect with technical, non-technical, and executive audiences

Desired Qualifications


  • PhD degree in a User Experience related field such as Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, Human Factors Psychology, Anthropology, Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field

  • Experience conducting user research on business to business offerings in the FinTech space

  • Experience managing teams

  • Thought leader in the wider UX community
