Position Overview / Job Summary:

Senior Product Managers work with Avalara's product teams, engineering teams, and business leaders to define the future direction and scope for our tax return and compliance services. These services are the backbone of our compliance services and critical to Avalara's end-to-end product offerings.

This role will lead Product efforts on Mergers & Acquisitions, especially supporting successful integration of new acquisitions and identification of potential acquisition targets.

The position is ideally located at Avalara HQ in Seattle, WA but can also be based out of the Durham, NC office or US remote.

What you'll do...

  • Work with the VP, Product Strategy to develop Day 1 and post-close plans for product integration of new acquisitions

  • Create prioritized roadmaps that deliver on acquisition goals

  • Develop product integration “playbook” to simplify future integrations

  • Where an acquisition fit within the responsibilities of an existing Avalara product manager, you will guide that PM in developing integration plans based on the playbook and best practices you have developed. Where it doesn't, you'll take the point on developing plans and work with Product leadership to recruit PM(s)

  • Identify product-driven M&A opportunities, working with product leaders to understand their needs and where “buy” might be a better option than “build” and with Corporate Development to identify target companies

  • Support due diligence of target acquisitions as needed

What you'll bring to the role...

  • 3-5+ years' experience as a SaaS product manager leading products at multiple lifecycle stages; facing multiple business challenges such as high growth, quick time to market, quality, and technology migrations; and ideally serving customer bases that span small business owners, SMB, and enterprise as well as mass-market and vertical niches

  • Demonstrated experience partnering cross-functionally, including with executives and other internal stakeholders driving business outcomes

  • Strong strategic thinking skills including the ability to synthesize unstructured information, identify non-obvious opportunities and relentlessly prioritize

  • Experience and love of taking on ambiguous problems and develop repeatable processes that enable you to hand over work to others (to support, e.g., development of the integration playbook so that you can increasingly leverage other PMs and focus on opportunity identification)

  • Team player who is able to drive results through influence and enthusiasm

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with experience conducting executive-level briefings and demos both internally and with customers

  • Degree in a relevant field (e.g., accounting, business, computer science); MBA desirable

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with startups and large, public companies

  • Experience with M&A, especially post-merger integrations

  • Experience with tax automation products, ERP, eCommerce, and other financial accounting systems

  • Familiarity with accounting and transactional tax compliance concepts (Sales & Use Tax, VAT, GST, etc.)

  • Experience as a strategy consultant at a top-tier firm (BCG, Bain, McKinsey)
