Job description summary: This supporting role works with internal and external partners and contractors managing nationwide Electric, Gas and Water Utility construction projects. Responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of identified Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) programs including the complex analysis of data resulting from these programs.
Primary responsibilities:
- Manages existing Environmental, Health and Safety programs as well as analyzes data to reduce risk in the work environment.
- Serves as a technical “expert” and provides technical support to internal and external stakeholders’ regarding compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
- Recommends and designs new Environmental, Health and Safety programs relative to risk management and hazard abatement.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to other employees in support of producing high quality, timely and cost-effective solutions to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State and local regulations.
- Build partnerships with groups, such as but not limited to those involved in training and performance assessment to identify learning and development gaps, identify solutions and to foster development of all employees relative to Health and Safety issues.
- Work as an individual contributor with substantial latitude for unreviewed action or decisions to lead functional teams or projects.
- Performs trending analysis to improve Environmental, Health and Safety performance by gathering data, developing reports, identifying gaps, evaluating risk and implementing process improvements and/or corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Provides governance and quality oversight of Environmental, Health and Safety programs.
- Participates in industrial conferences and benchmarks top performing organizations for program improvements.
- Provides project management services, including project coordination, contract administration, material tracking, scheduling and cost monitoring on projects, and review with management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 10 years’ Utility construction safety experience.
- Strong ability to communicate with, mentor and influence all levels of an organization.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with proven decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Strong Project Management skills
- Ability to execute large-scale initiatives in a complex, matrixed environment.
- A strong customer service orientation and collaborative work style is critical.
- Team oriented and self-motivated
- Must possess ambassador type qualities during personal interactions
- Superior oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to design and deliver reports.
- Superior facilitation and presentation skills
- Working knowledge of construction safety, electric utility construction safety strongly preferred.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental Management, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, or other equivalent technical field may be substituted for up to 5 years of experience.
- Successful completion of a board safety certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) is highly desired or 10 years of experience as an Electric Utility or Contractor Journeyman with active involvement in safety committees, training, policy development and field audits.
- Successful completion of a board safety certification such as Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) is highly desired.
Traveling requirements:
- Up to 75% travel required (must live or relocate to a company area and near major airport)
Safety: Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry and requirements to work with or around hazardous equipment, employees must have sufficient eyesight to judge distance/coordination of equipment and tools, be able to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time, be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather while completing work assignments, be able to wear personal protective equipment as necessary, be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day, have the endurance necessary to traverse various terrain, be capable of performing job duties throughout a standard 8- or 10-hour day, be able to communicate with others, read, write, and comprehend written/verbal job instructions and information, and communicate and handle conflict professionally.
