We are hiring an Area Manager for Transformer Services to lead multi‑crew field operations, drive technical excellence in transformer maintenance and diagnostics, and grow customer relationships in the New Jersey region.
Work Location & Schedule
- Primary Region: New Jersey and the surrounding Northeast
- Work Environment: Combination of field-based substation work and office/home-office coordination. Preference will be given to candidates residing in or willing to relocate to New Jersey or the Northeast region with the ability to travel
- Travel: Regular regional travel with overnight stays as needed
- Schedule: Full-time with flexibility for overtime, nights, weekends, and emergent utility response
- Union Requirement: Must be an IBEW member or willing to join; benefits are provided through IBEW Local and paid by AET
How You Will Make an Impact
As the Area Manager, you will:
- Lead and manage multiple field crews delivering transformer installation, testing, inspection, repair, and high‑voltage apparatus services
- Build and reinforce a world-class safety culture through daily engagement, JBOs, and consistent adherence to AET safety standards
- Oversee complex transformer projects including assembly, processing, diagnostics, and life-extension programs
- Provide advanced technical troubleshooting on transformer test results, equipment performance, and field abnormalities
- Ensure accurate, high-quality testing and documentation for TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, power factor, and oil analysis
- Partner with customers, project managers, and internal teams to plan work scopes, allocate resources, and ensure job readiness
- Support business development activities—maintaining strong customer relationships and identifying growth opportunities in the region
- Coach and mentor technicians to strengthen technical capabilities and build the next generation of field leadership
- Maintain complete and accurate project records including test reports, service notes, and cost-impacting scope changes
What You’ll Need to Be Successful
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5+ years of technical experience in transformer services, high-voltage testing, or substation apparatus maintenance
- Demonstrated ability to lead multi‑crew field operations safely and effectively
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for customer and internal coordination
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital field reporting tools
- Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record
- Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs and work safely in outdoor substations and high‑voltage environments
- Willingness to travel frequently with overnight stays
- Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights
- Successful completion of background checks and medical/drug screenings (where permitted)
- Residency in the Northeastern United States
- Member of or willingness to join the IBEW
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced experience with transformer diagnostic testing (e.g., Doble power factor, DLRO, IR, winding resistance, CT ratio/saturation)
- Knowledge of substation apparatus including HV/MV breakers, switchgear, CTs/PTs, CCVTs, and transformers
- Experience planning test scopes, interpreting test results, and supporting engineering decisions
- Technical knowledge of transformer assembly and vacuum processing
- Familiarity with crane/rigging operations, oil‑processing trailers, and transformer service best practices
- Experience with SF6 gas carts and gas-handling procedures

Compensation
- Wages for this position are determined by the IBEW Local collective bargaining agreement.
- Pay rates, premium pay, overtime rates, and travel/per diem allowances follow the current Local CBA and classification guidelines.
- AET compensates according to the established union wage schedule for the applicable classification and geographic region.
