Job Purpose

Our Argus Data Science team are currently looking for a Data Scientist to bolster the strength of our global team.


The primary focus of this role will be to make a significant contribution in the research and development of Argus’ Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities. In addition, you will have to contribute to the enhancement of the Argus’ capabilities and infrastructure for offering data science solutions for analytics.


As a Data Scientist – Operational Research, you will be responsible for keeping up to date on the latest research in the field of automatic machine learning and operational research. Much of the algorithms involves programming in R and experience in solving decision making problems using off-the-shelf commercial optimisers.


Key Responsibilities


  • Review existing and/or develop new machine learning models
  • Review existing and/or develop new models for solving optimisation problems (planning, etc)
  • Contribute to the development of model selection and model diagnostic techniques for multi-variate machine learning models
  • Develop and maintain models with a focus on commodity prices dynamics and analytics
  • Maintain documentation per company standards
  • Write production-level code (clean, and well-documented code)


Skills and Experience


  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a comparable quantitative field
  • Have a strong mathematical background with advanced knowledge in one or more of the following fields: discrete optimization, integer programming (including commercial optimization solvers), discrete-event simulation, dynamic programming, local search heuristics, genetic algorithms, or other metaheuristics
  • Have experience on applying metaheuristic algorithms on large scale combinatorial optimisation problems such as Vehicle Routing and Location problems.
  • Have experience in solving decision making problems using off-the-shelf commercial optimisers (eg. Gurobi) or building your own solution if necessary
  • Have experience in programming in both R and Python
  • Proficient in exploratory data analysis and model/algorithm prototyping and selection.
  • Have a good understanding of statistics and be familiar with a range of machine learning regression models (linear regression, etc)
  • Have experience in software development using version control (Git), unit testing, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment with changing requirements
  • Strong problem skills, able to think deeply about a business problem and devise a well-thought-out and pragmatic algorithmic solution.
  • You are comfortable with visualising and communicating data to various audiences, you easily articulate and present your ideas
  • Solid communication skills - in person, in writing, in code, and code-review; to technical and non-technical audiences
