The Director of Data Operations and Engineering will play a leading role in helping us to evolve our enterprise Data Platform, a set of systems and processes serving as the foundation for the now and future of AppFolio. You will help craft and execute our Data strategy, inspiring your direct team and others, and enable a continued transformation of internal processes and AI-powered products for the Real Estate industry.      

Your Impact      

  • Play a leading role in the evolution of AppFolio’s Data Platform, ensuring smooth and streamlined data capabilities and operations to power a continued data-led transformation of internal ops and customer-facing AI products.      
  • Provide strategic guidance for the organization's data initiatives and mentor our existing data teams in adopting modern data engineering and operational practices.      
  • Evolve our governance and observability processes across data flows and access paths, heightening the quality, reliability, security, and compliance of our data platform and products      
  • Define and influence the future of our data platform's technical stack, making it more efficient, resilient, and easier to manage.       
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to evolve and bring to life data operations & governance frameworks for key data processes, systems, and data sets

  • Adaptability - Maintaining effectiveness when experiencing changes; adjusting effectively to work within new structures, processes, requirements, or cultures.      

Must-Haves      

  • 10+ years in technical roles within a complex Data Platform and Engineering space, with 4+ years leading technical teams at a scaled organization.      
  • In-depth understanding of end-to-end data lifecycle technologies, covering data warehousing/storage, data movement, and transformation/modeling. Direct working experience with Snowflake, Iceberg, Kafka, Flink, Airflow, and dbt preferred.      
  • Track record of successfully managing complex projects in the space of data platform technology and operations, having experience managing production-line SLAs related to data availability, reliability, and quality.      
  • Experience in establishing and enforcing data governance frameworks, including data classification, access controls, and retention policies in accordance with data security, privacy, and compliance policies and procedures.      
  • Ability to formulate and communicate a clear strategic vision aligned with overall business objectives for data-related goals, balancing strategic thinking with hands-on execution to ensure successful project delivery.      
  • History of achieving measurable results and KPIs related to data operations and governance initiatives.      
  • Exceptional collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams, including Data Engineering, Data Science & Analytics, Security, Governance, and Privacy. Able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.      

Compensation & Benefits      

The base salary that we reasonably expect to pay for this role is $196,000-$270,000.      
The actual base salary for this role will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, education, experience, etc.       
Please note that base pay is one important aspect of a compelling Total Rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
