We are looking for an experienced Vice President of Accounting to provide technical oversight and operational leadership across all accounting functions. This leader will oversee, develop, and implement accounting policies, procedures, and systems to facilitate compliance with applicable financial and tax regulations and GAAP and SEC requirements. 
 
You will be a key leader of the finance leadership team and the broader AppFolio organization. You will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing AppFolio's growth through the preparation and disclosure of reliable financial statements and scaling the Accounting Team. Success in this position will require a strategic growth mindset and the ability to cross-functionally collaborate, implement effective accounting controls and processes, and serve as a trusted partner to the CFO and CEO. 
 
 
What You’ll Do:
  • Lead and develop a high-performing accounting organization; build a leadership bench, mentor team members, and future-proof the team by developing skills and competencies.
  • Oversee technical accounting, SEC filings, tax, treasury, order-to-cash, payroll, and other accounting-related functions.
  • Evolve and transform accounting, systems, policies, and procedures to incorporate best practices to deliver continuous improvements.  
  • Oversee the preparation and filing of materials with the SEC, including our Annual Report on Form 10-K, Quarterly Reports on Form 10-Q, and Current Reports on Form 8-K; partner with organizations across the business to ensure such filings are accurate and disclose current and material information. 
  • Financial statements are prepared timely, accurately and with sufficient disclosures in accordance with timelines communicated to the Audit Committee. 
  • Research and analyze technical accounting matters and make recommendations to the CFO in connection therewith. 
  • Maintain effective systems and controls to ensure the integrity of financial data and processes in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley and GAAP requirements.
  • Leverage technology to build scalable processes to create efficiencies, streamline accounting operations, and improve the employee experience.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate financial risks to protect the company’s financial health.
  • Drive external reporting, including communication with AppFolio’s external auditors and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial reporting.
  • Partner closely with the FP&A Team in activities such as financial planning and forecasting, performance reporting standards and governance, decision support, and business process leadership.
  • Establish strong relationships with cross functional departments and be the go-to accounting resource at AppFolio.
  • Provide insightful analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Participate and manage key business transactions such as financings, strategic investments, and the diligence process for potential acquisitions.
  • Oversee the integration of acquired businesses from an accounting perspective.
  • Educate and train on best accounting practices while building relationships with, and gaining the trust and confidence of, leaders across the business.
Reporting Structure and Location
  • The role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Preferred location is Santa Barbara, California with a preference of three days in the office. Fostering in-person connections are imperative to the success of the Finance organization and AppFolio culture.

  • Discretion & Confidentiality | Ability to exercise discretion, judgment, tact, and poise in handling highly sensitive and confidential information.
 
Must Haves
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; MBA preferred.
  • CPA licensed in California with public accounting experience (Big4 is a plus).
  • 15+ years of financial accounting experience at publicly traded companies.
  • 10+ years of proven leadership building and developing an Accounting organization.
  • Robust technical and external reporting experience and experience.
  • Mastery of US GAAP and SEC reporting requirements, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, and internal controls.
  • Experience managing international accounting functions for a global publicly-traded company, including consolidating US and non-US financial statements rolling up to the corporate level, and tax structuring.
 
 
Nice To Have 
  • Proven understanding and exposure to the real estate and technology industry, particularly in the context of SaaS solutions.
  • Deep experience with financial systems and tools (e.g., SAP, ERP).
  • Experience with the Workiva.
Compensation & Benefits
The base salary we expect to pay for this role is $228,000 to $285,000.
 
The actual base salary for this role may vary greatly to account for the wide range of skills, experience, and qualifications that candidates may possess at this level. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary expectations during the hiring process.
 
Base pay is one important aspect of a compelling total rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits or bonuses/commissions that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
