The Director of Accounting will lead and expand the capabilities of our Corporate Accounting, including the General Accounting, Financial Reporting, and Payroll teams, to ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain compliance with regulatory standards, and drive continuous process improvements. This role will guide the team in maintaining timely and compliant accounting practices while fostering staff development through coaching and mentorship. This role will set a clear and motivating vision for the team, aligning their efforts with AppFolio’s business objectives.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Director of Accounting with strong fundamental accounting skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a proven track record of driving operational excellence in a dynamic, multi-task-oriented environment.
What You’ll Do
  • Manage a high-performing team of Finance and Accounting professionals.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process; perform reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP; publish timely financial statements and analyze variances. 
  • Oversee the execution of all periodic filings with the SEC.
  • Drafting and reviewing technical and complex accounting matters. Manage strategic transactions such as M&A and strategic investments to ensure proper accounting and reporting compliance and assist with actions required for execution or implementation.
  • Oversee the payroll function and ensure appropriate processes are in place and functioning to run payroll accurately and on time.
  • Design and drive process improvements and automation initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of accounting operations in the area of responsibility.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and company policies. 
  • Perform oversight of periodic audits. Manage internal controls and compliance programs and support SOX compliance efforts. 
  • Partner with FP&A to help deliver accurate quarterly forecasts.
  • Develop and grow a team that demonstrates performance excellence. Mentor team members to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and teamwork. 
Reporting Structure and Location
  • The preferred location is Santa Barbara, California, ideally with a minimum of three days in the office. The ability to help educate and train while building relationships and the trust and confidence of the business is imperative to the success of the Finance organization and AppFolio culture.
  • Remote work is possible, but we expect regular travel to Santa Barbara and other AppFolio office hubs (San Diego, Dallas) to facilitate productive relationships and collaboration.

  • Technical Accounting: Strong knowledge of accounting standards and disclosure requirements under US GAAP and SEC regulations.

  • Operations: Builds and deploys operational processes and technologies, resulting in efficiencies across the organization.
  • Analytical and Problem Solving: Combined with impeccable business judgment and ability to communicate with the management team. Ability to lead great decision-making through the use of analytics.
  • Resourceful & Action-Oriented: Individual who possesses a proactive sense of urgency and who knows how to overcome obstacles to get things done in a timely fashion
  • Influence: Ability to influence seamlessly across stakeholders, cross-functional partners, and teams.
  • Connector: Earns trust and maintains confidence across and between dedicated team members and AppFolio. Establishes collaborative working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Business Advocacy / Execution: Results-oriented, objective business advocate; trusted advisor and business partner with the ability to drive business insights, actions, and accountability across departments. 
Must Haves
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
  • CPA licensed in California with public accounting experience (Big4 is a plus).
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience, big 4 public accounting firm experience preferred.
  • Proven success in leading and developing an accounting team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; concise communication when speaking to senior leadership.
  • Robust technical accounting experience and experience with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading transformational initiatives. 
  • Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems; experience with NetSuite is a plus.



Compensation & Benefits
The base salary we expect to pay for this role is $167,200 - $209,000
The actual base salary for this role may vary greatly to account for the wide range of skills, experience, and qualifications that candidates may possess at this level. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary expectations during the hiring process.
Base pay is one important aspect of a compelling total rewards package. The base pay range indicated here does not include any additional benefits, bonuses/commissions that you may be eligible for based on your role and/or employment type.
