About the Role

Blackboard’s Legal team supports all aspects of Blackboard’s business operations globally, including commercial relationships, strategic initiatives, risk management and compliance functions. The team works closely with business units across the company. Reporting to the Global Privacy and Trustworthy AI Officer (who is based in London), the Corporate Counsel- Privacy will serve as an important privacy and AI expert within the company’s dynamic and highly experienced Legal team. This position will work across functional areas and will be responsible for supporting privacy, trustworthy AI and security advisory matters and for supporting Blackboard’s data privacy and trustworthy AI programs.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Closely and proactively working with product and IT leadership and other internal stakeholders to advise on and support technology initiatives including AI features and projects
  • Supporting Blackboard’s privacy, trustworthy AI, and security programs including the maintenance and implementation of policies, training, impact assessments, audits, and registrations
  • Overseeing vendor and partner due diligence reviews related to privacy and trustworthy AI
  • Drafting and negotiating agreements with vendors, customers, partners, and consultants
  • Developing and maintaining customer-facing publications and responding to privacy-related enquiries from customers, individuals, and other stakeholders
  • Monitoring and advising on new privacy, AI and security laws, court cases, and other developments globally (including US) and communicating them internally and externally
  • Supporting compliance and risk management initiatives
  • Researching privacy, security, trustworthy AI and other legal issues and drafting memos as appropriate

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • 4-6 years of relevant legal experience at a law firm or in-house
  • Qualified lawyer in Colombia
  • Fluency in written and spoken English at CEFR C1 level or above
  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Knowledge of global data privacy laws (incl. EU GDPR)
  • In-depth experience in drafting and negotiating contracts in English
  • Excellent legal research, analytical, writing, judgment, and decision-making skills
  • Experience in implementing and maintaining data privacy or similar programs
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate with and influence senior leadership
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A strong attention to detail, commitment to quality work product and excellence
  • Self-direction, confidence, urgency, and initiative, as well as the ability to work with a global team to achieve goals and objectives in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

 

Preferred Skills and Experience 

  • Privacy or AI certification such as IAPP CIPP / AIGP
  • Knowledge of global AI laws such as the EU AI Act and the Colorado AI Act
  • Experience advising global SaaS companies
  • Experience with laws applicable to institutions of higher education (incl. FERPA)
