About the Role

The Assistant General Counsel (AGC) will play a critical role in supporting the company’s strategic corporate initiatives and help the company scale responsibly while managing legal risk.

Working closely with the General Counsel, and in partnership with Legal, Compliance and Business teams, the AGC will be a lead regulatory advisor with a focus on federal and state consumer protection, lending and debt collection laws in auto-financing.

  • This is a hands-on role ideal for an attorney that is deeply curious and a strategic problem solver.

  • The AGC will have significant ownership, exposure to senior leadership and the opportunity to influence the company’s strategies

  • Supports initiatives related to state licensing and examinations and engagement with regulators.

  • This role is onsite and based out of our headquarters in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Open to candidates willing to relocate. Position requires relocation to Spartanburg, SC by start date.

What You’ll Do

Regulatory and Licensing:

  • Provide strategic legal counsel and guidance on regulatory matters related to consumer protection, lending and auto-finance (FCRA for Lenders, TILA, ECOA, FDCPA, TCPA, EFTA, UDAPP).

  • As a lead counsel for loan originations, provide strategic and timely advice to the Business on adherence to state-specific lending laws, including usury caps, loan term rules, underwriting standards, and repayment schedules.

  • As lead counsel for loan originations, advise the Business on existing and new product initiatives for indirect/direct lending, including applicable controls to manage related risks and compliance with law.

  • Advise the Servicing Business on adherence to federal and state debt collection laws.

  • Provide guidance and support to Compliance on state licensing and examinations.

  • Partner cross-functionally with Compliance and Business leaders to interpret and operationalize regulatory requirements across originations and servicing, ensuring effective governance, monitoring, and risk management.

    • Evaluate changes in consumer protection, lending, auto finance, and debt collection laws

    • Implement and maintain controls to support ongoing regulatory compliance

  • Liaise with outside counsel on regulatory matters.

The Leadership Opportunity

  • Lead regulatory expertise within the Legal department, partnering with peers to guide interpretation, assess risk, and inform legal and business strategy.

  • Lead and continuously improve Legal team processes and workflows to ensure consistent achievement of goals, SLAs, and strategic objectives with a focus on advancing process efficiency and scalability.

  • Drive a culture of accountability, performance and development across the Legal team by coaching peers, setting clear expectations, and reinforcing high standards.

  • Own and drive corporate governance processes related to policy management including driving timely updates, alignment to regulatory requirements and cross-functional coordination.

  • Partner with the General Counsel to manage internal and external legal resources, including prioritization of work, allocation of resources, and ensuring high-quality, timely deliverables.

What You Bring

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.

  • 10+ years of related experience, including experience in an in-house legal role.

  • Active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.

  • Knowledge and experience in auto finance is preferred.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Highly motivated, meticulous professional who thrives in fast-paced environments with a strong sense of professionalism.

  • Experience coaching and mentoring teams, influencing senior stakeholders, and driving cross-functional outcomes strongly preferred.
