About this opportunity

The Manager, Materials Engineering should have exceptional skills with managing teams and involved in product research and development along with experience in early product development, like conceptualization of new products/methods to proof-of-concept. 

The Manager, Materials Research Engineering group, is responsible for a talented team of Scientists/engineers in the execution of our research and development focusing on exploring new polymer chemistry and materials in Align applications.  The person in this role should have a keen interest and knowledge in current trends of technologies and making a technical advancement.  The manager will define the objectives and milestones to achieve the project goal, determine the timelines to accomplish these goals, provide technical leadership to the team members in the execution of the projects and deliver the project on time.

In this role, you will…


  • Participates in defining the team road-map and the plan toward product release
  • Demonstrates strong technical leadership and participates in all aspects of polymer chemistry and materials engineering in new technology exploration and early product development
  • Analyzes and investigates polymer chemistry and materials engineering tasks and ensure tasks are planned according to requirements and timelines
  • Expert in analysis and evaluation of polymer chemistry and materials with focus of 3D printing materials and formulations.  Expert in working with DSC, DMA, thermo-mechanical analysis, SEM, and other conventional and non-conventional failure analysis techniques
  • Experience in joint development program management, contract management, strategic partner relations, collaborating with external research institutions/consultants, and designs of instrumentation and test facilities. 
  • Interacts with cross-functional teams such as product design and software engineers, operation, manufacturing, marketing, and regulatory to define project and/or lab testing requirements
  • Demonstrated strong ability in orchestrating, leading, and motivating dynamic teams of highly caliber technical individuals; with focus in fostering leadership qualities in individual team members, and empowering team members to make key technical contribution in developing quality, life sustaining products
  • Manage scientists/engineers in the delivery of all committed projects on-time, on-scope, and adherence to corporate standards and quality
  • Documents test protocols in accordance with FDA regulations
  • Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation and growth of the group
  • Evaluates team and individual performance and makes compensation recommendations
  • Motivates, mentors, coaches, and guides individual team members for their professional growth
  • Work with your manager, other cross-functional teams, and professionals in the field at all levels to identify possible improvements to product performance
  • Understands span of control to escalate or delegate issues to appropriate levels

  • Experience in managing multiple research or development projects in parallel


  • BS in Chemistry, Chemical engineering or Materials Engineering related field, and/or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in product research and development
  • 3+ years of experience in managing a team of engineers/scientists
  • Experience in managing multiple research or development projects in parallel
  • Experience in early product development, like conceptualization of new products/methods to proof-of-concept

Nice to have

  • Master of Science or Ph.D. Chemistry, Chemical engineering or Materials Engineering, and/or equivalent experience preferred
  • Experience in Medical Device product development is preferable
