Position Summary:

The Energy & Optimization Engineer will be responsible for a wide range of technical activities including – conducting facility optimization reviews (energy audits, recommissioning investigations, energy retrofit incentive studies), developing and analyzing FIM recommendations, writing optimization reports, implementing FIMs (comprehensive BMS reprogramming), Kaizen software deployment, Kaizen reviews and maintenance report, and holding client findings review meetings. Candidates with suitable experience will also conduct on-site equipment reviews, functional testing, and minor control hardware and sensor installation (or supervise and project manage these activities). Training will be provided on energy management strategies and analysis techniques, mechanical design and retrofit strategies, and on the use and deployment of Kaizen.


  • Implement optimization projects involving – comprehensive BMS reprogramming (of chiller plants, VAV systems etc.), retrofits of control hardware, sensors, VFDs, valves and dampers, Kaizen software deployment, and the resolution of maintenance issues.
  • Independently lead smaller optimization projects and Kaizen reporting contracts.
  • Conduct comprehensive facility optimization reviews including facility walk-throughs, drawing and equipment manual reviews, BMS sequence reviews, trend data analysis, and summarizing findings, recommendations, and energy analysis results in clear and concise reports.
  • Support the investigation, design and estimating of energy management retrofits.
  • Deploy and utilize the CopperTree Kaizen software for projects and service contracts.
  • Develop energy metering plans, and prepare Kaizen energy dashboards and M&V reports.
  • Engage clients and DDC technicians on the use of and findings generated by Kaizen. Lead findings review meetings with clients’ energy management and operations teams, and provide technical expertise on facility issues, operational strategies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Through ongoing projects and programs, maintain strong client relationships and work with clients to ensure ESC’s optimization services are best tailored to meet their needs. Help establish and maintain optimization and maintenance work pipelines.
  • Provide training to client operators on Kaizen, implemented optimization measures, and energy management strategies.
  • Coordinate with ESC and Ainsworth technicians for the construction component of energy retrofit projects.
  • Support the sales process by conducting technical investigation and site inspections, and developing labour and material estimates


  • 3-5 years of related experience.
  • EIT or P.Eng. registration, or the ability to register. Strong candidates with a related technical diploma will be considered.
  • Energy management training or certification – CEM or equivalent.
  • Experience in BMS design, configuration and HVAC system operating strategies.
  • Strong written ability to summarize findings and recommendations in reports.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage clients and stakeholders on improvement recommendations.
