Job Summary:

Under the direction of the National Director, Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), the HSE Specialist  will be responsible for directly ensuring that their assigned Business Unit (BU) implements and maintains all provincial and company mandated HSE programs, through collaborative project management and ongoing training and development.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain regional HSE Management Systems (HSE-MS) as developed by Ainsworth HSE. Provide feedback to the Regional HSE Team on the status of HSE-MS activities and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Facilitate regional HSE and COR activities, conduct internal COR audits, and complete HSE Specialist scorecard tasks.
  • Support environmental program requirements and manage regional activities related to waste, pollution, spills, and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform all job functions in accordance with company health, safety, and environmental policies, as well as relevant government regulations.
  • Serve as backup for other HSE personnel as needed.
  • Attend toolbox talks, project management, and service meetings to provide HSE support.
  • Facilitate regional HSE meetings with operational business unit (BU) leaders.
  • Respond promptly to incident notifications, escalate issues to supervisors as needed, and assist with case management during and outside regular business hours.
  • Provide accurate and timely information for regional HSE prequalification activities.
  • Collaborate with regional BU leaders to manage fleet safety, review driver risk scorecards, and use GPS data for incident investigations.
  • Coordinate facility and equipment inspections to identify health and safety hazards and ensure corrective or preventative actions are implemented.
  • Monitor regional preventative maintenance programs to ensure regulatory compliance for fleet, tools, and equipment, including calibration and testing.
  • Maintain records and coordinate investigations of work-related incidents such as injuries, illnesses, vehicle accidents, and property damage. Recommend corrective or preventative actions to reduce or eliminate recurrence.
  • Manage workers' compensation claims and return-to-work programs while promoting overall health and safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate and monitor environmental control activities, including waste minimization, recycling, reduction of hazardous chemicals, pollution control, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the HSE field within the construction environment, both unionized and non-unionized. Demonstrated ability to manage heavy workloads and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of provincial Occupational Health & Safety Acts and Regulations, WSIB legislation, fire and electrical codes.
  • Post-secondary education in Health, Safety, and Environment or equivalent experience. CRSP designation or active pursuit of this certification is considered an asset.
  • Proven facilitation, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills required to deliver training and coaching to individuals and teams at all organizational levels.
  • Previous experience with HSE systems that meet COR standards and familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and other relevant HSE standards.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.
