ActioNet has an immediate opportunity for a Network Engineer requiring a Public Trust. The position is 100% remote. Preference will be given to candidates within a drivable distance to Newport, OR and Silver Springs, MD. Travel up to 20% per year is expected.


The Network Engineer will lead the design, deployment, and maintenance of shipboard and shore-based network infrastructure to support NOAA’s Marine Operations modernization efforts. This role ensures secure, high-performance connectivity between vessels, shore facilities, and cloud platforms, enabling real-time data workflows and compliance with federal cybersecurity mandates.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Stage and configure Fortinet firewalls, Dell HCI, and networking hardware at MOC-P
  • Implement and optimize data flows between ship, shore, and cloud (Azure)
  • Configure VLANs, VPNs, SD-WAN, and routing protocols for secure and efficient connectivity
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot routing issues
  • Maintain network documentation, performance metrics, and change logs
  • Coordinate with MACC/NWAVE and shipboard engineers for integration and issue resolution
  • Support annual penetration testing and vulnerability scanning efforts
  • Provide Tier 2 support for network incidents and outages

Basic Qualifications (Required):

  • 5 years of experience in enterprise or field-deployable networks
  • Strong understanding of IP networking and routing protocols
  • Experience with Fortinet, Cisco, VLANs, and Anycast/BGP/MPLS
  • Familiarity with Linux and scripting (Python, Bash)
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex system and application issues
  • Strong documentation and version control skills
  • Effective communication skills for diverse stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fortinet NSE certifications
  • CompTIA Network+
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
