  1. Purpose of Job:


  • Reporting to the Global Marketing Director, this role has full responsibility of the entire Derwent product range, leading product planning and portfolio management based on Derwent’s marketing strategy, market intelligence and a deep understanding of the target consumer.
  • The Senior Product Manager drives all key product development decisions in order to deliver innovative and competitive new products and evolve existing products to sustain competitive advantage. This includes manufactured and bought out finished goods, working directly with internal and outsourced manufacturing.
  • As owner of the product marketing strategy, the Senior Product Manager utilises knowledge of the market and consumer to determine appropriate positioning and routes to market throughout the product lifecycle to maximise performance, responding to changes in circumstances and recommending action.
  • Along with sales and operations, the SPM manages product availability and stock turn, delivering overall inventory efficiency and the impact on working capital and provides sales analysis and financial reporting for the wider business.
  • The SPM acts as product expert and key point of contact within the marketing team for all internal team members and for external product enquiries and assists in the delivery of brand communications.
  • Targeted on achievement of sales, profit and market share, this role ensures Derwent maintains its leadership position within its established markets and develops into a market-leading name in all other global territories for long-term sustainable value and growth.



  • Principle Accountabilities & Key Tasks:


  • Defining product propositions and directing product range development, in partnership with Derwent Tech Team, Marketing, Sales and Sourcing.
  • Work with the Product Managers to build information for Gate Process, including financial analysis of product costs and margins for new and existing products detailing the gross margin return on investment of the products profitability.
  • External market sensing – follow competitors, new entrants, possible future threats and opportunities and feed-back impact or potential impact to the business  with clear analysis and recommendations.
  • Regular review of market opportunities vs stated objectives recommending action to address market changes.  Incorporate consumer, market and retail/trade insights and feedback from all key stakeholders into the product strategy and product marketing plan.
  • Management of the Channel / Range sales mix, supporting sales strategy and monitoring costs to serve.  Shared responsibility with sales team to ensure appropriate ranging and distribution with retailers. May include channel exclusives.
  • Own the product roadmap document, presenting clearly product lifecycles within the range and any range transitions – regularly present/circulate this document to all relevant internal team members
  • Develop product pricing, managing street price across multiple territories and channels.  Model forecasts and sales for NPD
  • Build, track and maintain sales forecasts, particularly for NPD together with the sales team
  • Develop and maintain an up to date product range presentation, which forms part of the brand deck highlighting range structure, heroes and sell-up strategy with value proposition and use cases clearly laid out.
  • Product lifecycle management from effective launch through to run-rate management and eventual exit, including cost pricing, supporting sales with price structure to different markets and channels, and assisting with repositions and tactical pricing.
  • Stock management, including actions to maintain inventory freshness in the warehouse and healthy stocks in channel
  • Continuous monitoring of relevant trends to provide specialist knowledge, contributing to organisational learning and decision-making.
  • Support teams with product training and provide useful tools and materials for internal product knowledge.
  • Create technical specifications - detailed information for manufacturing and sourcing requirements.
  • Maintain and update product data, keeping product information up-to-date, including websites and data sheets
  • Represent the Derwent brand as a  key internal product expert and be prepared to support any external 3rd party meetings with agencies, members of the press, retailers etc. and seek to build relationships with industry influencers, strategic partners and suppliers.
  • Work collaboratively with the broader marketing team to assist them in the development of NPD/GTM launch plans and creation of collateral including photography, manuals, packaging, merchandising and online assets
  • Contribute to all initiatives designed to deliver new revenue streams and value for Derwent.
  • Support Derwent plans for global expansion, covering all the above aspects for other territories and languages.
  • Manage the Derwent product management team including line management and professional development of all other Product Managers and Execs.

  • Knowledge & Experience:


  • Degree qualified, preferably in Business or Marketing
  • Minimum 5 years experience in consumer Product Marketing roles with evidence of successful product launches
  • Preferable if experience has been gained in HQ of an international company or ability to demonstrated they have experience of driving strategic product management i.e. not just executing a plan
  • Experience of working in a complex matrix structure would be a distinct advantage
  • Strong commercial knowledge and aptitude
  • Excellent knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Good organisation and problem solving skills, with attention to detail
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written, with strong presentation skills
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Detailed and results orientated
  • An individual with a high degree of self-motivation with the ability to multi-task.
  • Must be a team player
  • Flexibility to travel within in the UK and overseas as required
  • Languages would be a plus (especially French & Spanish)
