HEAD START
Head Start classes are free, federally funded programs designed to promote school readiness for preschoolers from families that meet income eligibility requirements. The programs encourage family involvement through regular visits to the child’s home and provide opportunities for families to volunteer in the programs and participate in special activities to support their child’s learning. Staff and teachers help link children and families to other services in the community, such as free medical and dental care services, food resources, and mental health services. Head Start programs also support children with identified needs (such as physical and developmental delays), children in foster care, and children experiencing homelessness. A great majority of children in our New Rochelle Head Start classrooms come from Spanish speaking homes. The program has bilingual teachers in each classroom to support children’s speech and language development in both English and Spanish, and to best connect with families.
SPECIAL CLASS IN INCLUSIVE SETTING (SCIS)
Children with an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) learn alongside their typically developing peers. A certified special education teacher co-teaches with a general education teacher and a teaching assistant to offer a higher teacher:student ratio and more support for learners with special needs.
Related services of physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech therapy (ST) are provided onsite. Children receive services in a familiar setting and parents and caregivers have less schedule juggling.
SPECIAL CLASSES
Certified special education teachers provide individualized instruction to meet the needs of children who have a variety of special needs. Class sizes of 8, or 12 are available, depending on the needs of the child.
Related services of physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST), and counseling (CO) are provided onsite.
This position requires that applicants be enrolled in a degree program that will grant them credit hours for their field placement.

- Assist Head Teacher in the program
- Demonstrate care, support, and compassion for young children and families.
- Participate in meeting the goals and objectives of the child as noted on IEP
- Responsible and dependable pattern of attendance
- Present appropriate professional appearance
- Engage in frequent verbal interactions with children
- Utilize positive redirection to manage challenging behaviors

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONAL / ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT:
- Opportunity to assist children from all different backgrounds in a classroom setting

QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:
- Strong organization skills with accurate attention to detail
- Sufficient skills to communicate effectively with both students and staff
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Current college level student pursuing a degree in education, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or speech therapy
