Associate Software Developer Engineer in Test
Description
Let’s Break It Down: Who We’re Looking For
Are you fresh out of college with a CS degree and an itch to build software that ensures other software works flawlessly? Do you get just as excited about designing a clean test harness or automation framework as you do about finding a tricky bug? If you're ready to roll up your sleeves and write code that validates, stresses, and strengthens complex client-server systems, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re looking for an Associate Software Developer Engineer in Test who thinks like a developer but champions quality at every step. This role lives in the QA organization, but your primary tool is code. You’ll design and extend automation frameworks, build scalable test infrastructure, and create the kind of smart, maintainable test systems that catch problems before customers ever see them. If you enjoy solving non-trivial engineering problems, digging into root causes, and building tools that make an entire team better—you’ll fit right in.
This is a remote role focused on the Victoria, BC region—where we have a handful of awesome teammates you might collaborate with from time to time. Most of our engineers are based in Seattle, with a few others spread across North America. No matter where you sit, you’ll feel connected, supported, and part of a broader engineering team that values quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Extending, debugging, and writing test automation code primarily in Python and Groovy (with opportunities in C#, Java, or C++), under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Contributing to functional and regression automation suites for complex client-server systems.
- Assisting in the development of simulation tools, utilities, and test data generation frameworks.
- Writing and maintaining automated tests that run in our CI/CD pipelines.
- Debugging automation failures and helping investigate issues across distributed systems to identify root causes.
- Collaborating with SDETs, Software Test Engineers, and developers to ensure new features are testable and well-validated.
- Reviewing user stories and helping identify edge cases, potential failure scenarios, and automation opportunities.
- Testing and validating software across Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS platforms, often within VMWare and Azure cloud environments.
- Supporting manual testing efforts when needed—executing exploratory testing, verifying fixes, and helping validate complex scenarios.
- Clearly documenting defects, verifying fixes, and advocating for high product quality.
- Protecting the security and privacy of Absolute and its customers.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
What You Bring to the Team
- A B.S. degree in Computer Science.
- Knowledge of Unit Testing, Component Testing, and System Testing.
- A history of finding software flaws.
- Curiosity and aptitude for self-directed learning.
- You have written and debugged client-server networking code.
- Familiarity with Azure cloud environments (and a willingness to learn more).
- Solid networking know-how and troubleshooting chops (Windows or Linux).
- Self-motivated, with the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member.
- Strong analytical skills and excellent organizational habits—you like things tidy, trackable, and clear.
- Quick learner with an eye for detail and a drive to make things better.
- A communicator, collaborator, and all-around quality advocate.
- A natural instinct to break things—and break them well.
Bonus Points For…
- You have built a lab network, or homelab.
- You have built software that others use.
- Experience as a network administrator, NOC analyst, or support engineer for a client-server product.
- Knowledge or experience with AI tools—especially in the context of development, testing, or boosting personal/team efficiency.
- Being bilingual—Japanese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, or Portuguese are all great!
