POSITION: STEM INSTRUCTOR II
CLASSIFICATION CODE: EXEMPT FULL TIME
DEPARTMENT: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATH (STEM) AND SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) PROGRAM
REPORTS TO: STEM TEACHER/CERTIFIED STEM TEACHER
STATEMENT OF JOB:
The STEM Instructor II provides therapeutic and recreational services by assisting in organizing, planning, and running school, after school, school breaks, and summer Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) programs services to children and adolescents enrolled or eligible to be enrolled with Apache Behavioral Health Services Inc. (ABHS). This position is responsible for implementation of individualized behavioral health promotion lessons for Social Emotional Learning (SEL) behavioral plans within the context of the ABHS STEM program in school or community-based environments. The STEM Instructor II is responsible for the scheduling, setup, and delivery of the STEM SEL curriculum and hands-on learning projects in classroom environments and during extracurricular activities outside of school; supporting teachers and STEM SEL Staff with the integration of STEM SEL projects to successfully integrate the use of effective strategies in order to enhance student learning. In addition the STEM SEL Instructor’s specific duties include delivering STEM projects and SEL lessons directly to students. The STEM SEL instructor needs a valid AZ substitute teaching license to be able to work with students without direct supervision or assistance within the public school setting as well as Behavioral Health Technician certification in order to implement Behavioral Health Promotion lessons.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages a caseload of clients/potential clients who would benefit from behavioral health services.
- Provides therapeutic services assistance to ABHS clinical staff, including, but not limited to, school and community visits, appointment coordination, outreach services for clients having difficulty accessing services, and/or for reengagement in treatment services.
- Facilitates group and individual behavioral health promotion and education programs in coordination with ABHS clinician, including, but not limited to client walk-in services.
- Facilitates group and individual behavioral health promotion programs before, during, and after STEM projects and provides individual, group, and counseling services to clients when needed.
- Documents contact with clients in order to assess needs, maintain required paperwork and engage family members. Complete documentation in accordance with Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and ABHS Standards.
- Work directly with STEM SEL Educators, Coordinators, SEL Specialists, Developers and WUSD Teachers in the development, implementation and evaluation of STEM SEL initiatives and curriculum.
- Provide consistent communication with Clinicians, ABHS School Therapists, School Coaches in the delivery of Behavioral Health services of ABHS enrolled clients.
- Take a leadership role in coordinating, organizing, and implementing special ABHS-sponsored or -supported events/activities, including before school, after school, during lunch, on weekends, holidays and summer break.
- Implement the STEM SEL curriculum for K-12 students; work directly with individual students and groups of students as a STEM SEL BHT instructor;
- Prepare weekly STEM project lesson plans, project examples for use in classroom projects, and verify all STEM supplies needed are on hand to deliver lessons.
- Identify and report to STEM Teachers and Developers concerning learning needs, barriers and challenges in the organizing and implementation of STEM SEL curricula; and implement problem-solving actions.
- Communicate with STEM Teachers and Coordinators about inventory on hand, and supplies and tools needed for implementing STEM projects
- Assist and provide input and support plans to implement STEM SEL curricula into existing courses or assist in developing new courses and curricula. Ensure all program activities are directly connected to both the classroom expectations of the school and the vision of the STEM SEL Program.
- Share information and best practices in STEM SEL implementation with STEM SEL staff. Provide assistance to all STEM Tech staff during implementation of STEM SEL lessons.
- Provide oversight for technology devices used in the classroom; Implement the use of technology to deliver the STEM SEL lessons.
- Coordinate and organize any special STEM SEL events/activities including before school, after school, lunchtime, weekends and holidays.
- Abide by all applicable policies, procedures, and program standards of ABHS, White Mountain Apache Tribe, Indian Health Services, Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and other pertinent regulatory authorities.
- Maintain ethical policies and guidelines as outlined in accepted State ethics laws, rules, policies and principles and as outlined in discipline-specific code of ethics.
- Participation in all required ABHS training including ongoing clinical oversight.
- Provide a positive role model to clients and staff through leadership, self-discipline, and genuine care for the treatment and recovery of clients. All clients and staff members must be treated with dignity and respect.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a bachelor degree (mental health/human services or education related field preferred) and a current permanent AZ substitute teacher’s license and qualify as a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) in the state of AZ.
- One year mental health experience preferred; experience working with Native Americans preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to speak the Apache language preferred.
- Demonstrate strong critical thinking, problem-solving and organizational and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively with a wide range of people, teams, managers, supervisors, including basic knowledge in supervising and evaluating staff
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
- MS Office proficiency and ability to correctly operate copy machine and fax.
- Ability to pass all pre-employment testing, including, but not limited to, fingerprint clearance, drug testing and background check.
