Would You Consider Yourself Right Brain Dominant?
Creative Services creates the look and feel of the site, replaces and maintains existing site graphics and designs internal messaging. We work hard to ensure that the design conveys the brand message. We enjoy listening to music on Fridays, watching people bouncing off gigantic red balls and having rubber band wars!
Meet Our Zapponians
Describe the career growth path you've taken at Zappos. Before joining Zappos, I spent the majority of my career in senior leadership roles, managing design & production teams. I joined Zappos at a really interesting time coming in as a manager and soon being transitioned into a variety of roles across multiple business units in the company. The move to Holacracy allowed me to concentrate on advocating for design and creative services with circles that had before outsourced their work to external agencies, pursue the vast catalog of leadership courses offered through ZapposU and start from scratch a six-part design education curriculum available to the entire company.
Describe the relationships you've built with your co-workers. I’m so fortunate to work with an incredibly diverse, passionate and dedicated group of family members here at Zappos (because when you’re here, your more than just a colleague). By working in advocate role and creating close ties with our multiple business units I’ve developed great friends across the entire company in CLT, Merchandising, Lifecycle, Awareness and more. I’m truly honored to work with such a great team everyday.
How do you describe your work to your friends and family? I describe Zappos as a place where you can bring your real self to work. I feel like I can be fully me when I'm at work. I don't have to leave parts of me outside waiting for the time that I'm not at work. When someone asks me if you have to be weird to work at Zappos, my answer always is, "You can be yourself...that's weird enough." Zappos is also a place where you are challenged. You are challenged with change...both jumping on board and being the change agent yourself. Lastly I say that the term "culture" doesn't exclude hard work. People hear about the wild stuff we do at Zappos and they think it's all a big party. While we to party hard, working hard is equally as important to the culture as Scorpion Shots. Working hard to ensure that the company and culture is healthy is something that has to be driven. There has to be effort. It's like rowing a boat up stream...if you stop trying you start to drift backwards. You don't have a place like Zappos on accident.
How would you describe what it's like to work at Zappos in just 1 word? Motivating
What advice would you give to someone applying to a job in your department? Aside from being passionate about your craft and displaying creativity the most important advice I can share with someone applying for the AV team would be to be yourself. We’re a tight knit family who kicks it in and out of work and I feel like we have really good chemistry because we can be honest with each other and be ourselves.
What are some of the challenges you enjoy most? Because I’m the only audio guy in a team of videographers I get requests for different genres that I don’t normally produce or have experience with. No matter how difficult some projects are I enjoy the challenge of exploring and creating something I’ve never done before. In those instances the music I create may not be the best but I am always able to take something away from the experience.
What do you think it takes to be successful at Zappos? I don't think there are any certain steps that you need to take to become successful here at Zappos, but rather certain things that you need to be willing to do. You need to be willing to learn and grow and sometimes learn new ways of thinking/working. You should be willing to find your passion, which may be something different than what you were initially hired for or what you know how to do best. You need to be a willing to become a part of the team and the Zappos family. Most importantly, there needs to be a willingness to accept and adapt to change which happens a lot here at Zappos.
What is a typical day like for you at Zappos? A typical day at Zappos here at the Photo Studio can be a whirlwind but I wouldn't have it any other way. We have lots of different tasks to accomplish daily to make sure that the Video Team and the studio as a whole run smoothly at all times. We also have the opportunity to fill different roles with other focuses outside of our main jobs because of the way that our company is structured. There's always something to do, projects to work on, meetings to go to, emails to read, events to attend, and much more. We wear many different hats at times and one day will most likely be different from the next. The common factor from day to day is that everything is done with friends and family around who come in the form of coworkers. They make working at Zappos a fun and exciting experience everyday!
What is your favorite part about your job? The best part of my job is, hands-down, the people that I work with. Everyone that I have the privilege of working alongside are passionate, caring, driven, and super creative. I've made a lot of friends here that I know will be life long friends. I consider myself lucky to work with such great folks! Second to the people, though, is definitely being in the photo bay shooting with the photographer and model. It's an awesome experience to be able to work with creative people and while still working in the fashion realm, which is one of my all-time passions!
What led you to your current role at Zappos? What led me to Zappos? Definitely an interesting path! I actually used to model for Zappos way back in 2013 and that's essentially what got me here. During that short time, I was immersed in the cool and laid back environment of Zappos. When I saw that, there was no way I was going to rest until I got a job here! It just so happened that there was a styling position available and I had enough experience to get me on the team! It's been an awesome ride and I'm so fortunate to be here!
What advice would you give to someone applying to a job in your department? Always go above and beyond your responsibilities and never settle for the bare minimum. Oh, and having a knack for writing and editing is also useful … so I hear.
What makes Zappos a great place to work? Zappos is more like a community than a work place. Not only do I get to work here, but my entire family gets to be involved in events sponsored by the company. I think my kids just assume they'll work here when they grow up.
What do you think it takes to be successful at Zappos? To be truly successful at Zappos, you have to be adaptable because we NEVER stop changing. Survival is more than rolling with the punches. You have to welcome the punches, knowing that growth and learning will inevitably be the reward. Also, you should be extremely interested in developing sincere and genuine friendships with coworkers. It's these relationships that make every day at Zappos a dream.
