Custom Build Specialist (Retail/Exhibit Displays)

The Build Specialist is responsible for taking our unique design concepts and successfully being able to build custom displays or custom pieces for retail, trade shows, museums, product prototypes, or anything our clients may want or request. Our expert Build Specialists work together to figure out the best possible way to make what may seem impossible, possible and bring it to physical form.  They also create, mold, cut, fabricate, mount, assemble, ship, deliver and/or install a finished product to client specifications. They often use a variety of mediums to achieve artistic or decorative effects.

This position is part of our production team, so you must be open to extending your hours, occasionally working overtime (10-12 hour days) when production is high. Typical work schedule is M-F 8:00am-5:00pm.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build and install custom displays retail displays and other environmental components and graphics.
  • Cut, trim, file, bend images and or materials using hand-held razors, straight edges and power tools.
  • Sand, finish and clean material prior to painting.
  • Mount images/graphics and other display components to various substrates.
  • Apply paint to surfaces using various tools: artistic fine detail brushes to spray gun.
  • Perform light maintenance duties within all WB buildings.
  • Regularly clean and maintain equipment/tools, as well as work area to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Remove, dispose and store materials properly.
  • Work independently on projects, within a tight time line.
  • Collaborate alongside colleagues and external consultants.
  • Accept criticism and be able to work with a positive outlook.
  • Be flexible and willing to adapt design ideas to meet technical criteria.
  • Support the organization by converting concepts and ideas into final projects ready by deadline.
  • Understand our clients and their demand standard for quality and innovative work.
  • Drive a lift truck safely.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Custom acrylic work and heat bending.
  • Vinyl installation.
  • Operate a 60" wide laminator for applying polyester laminates to printed images using pressure sensitive and/or thermal laminates.
  • Accurately handle the packaging, shipping and receiving of projects and materials.
  • Assist with the operation of a wide format UV Digital Printer.
  • Assist in operating and maintaining Digital router tables when needed.
  • Assist in thermoforming methods/procedures.
  • Assist in other Finishing & Building team responsibilities needed.


  • Associates Degree or equivalent work experience; Prototype, Carpentry, or related fields.
  • Custom cabinet experience preferred or similar custom build work a must.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience in building and/or carpentry, preferred.
  • Must have a clean driving record and valid drivers license.
  • Must be fluent with tools and materials.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work mandatory overtime when workload and project deadlines dictate (sporadic weekends).
  • Must be able to collaborate alongside colleagues and external consultants professionally and efficiently.
  • Must be open to occasional travel to assist in occasional installs, both local and/or overnight.
  • Forklift certification preferred.
  • Strong math skills and the ability to read and understand ruler and measurement.
  • Basic computer skills (email, web browser).
