Strategy Director
Description
Wavemaker Hong Kong is looking for a Strategy Director to spearhead the strategy pillar of the office, working close with client team leaders across our Local and International teams. It is an exciting role, spanning many of our clients that are established famous brands and exciting super growth brands.
This role is a key role within the organization, tasked with driving the media strategy product of Wavemaker, including aspects such as audience insight, communication and media strategy development, role of media guidelines, key data partner relationship management.
The role will span the Wavemaker Hong Kong office, which is 2 key departments – one that handles clients focused just on Hong Kong (the Local Team), and one that handles clients with multi-market scope (the International Team).
Reporting of the role
This role co-reports to the GroupM VP of Strategy & Growth and the VP of Wavemaker Hong Kong.

Measures of success –
In 3 months:
· Understand the key teams and clients that the role has allocated FTE
· Undertake key trainings on the relevant Wavemaker and GroupM tools and resources available in the role, both locally and globally
· Begin to set the overall agenda for the role, seeing what the core opportunities are and gaps that need to be filled
In 6 months:
· You will have at least started to work on projects with key clients
· You will have started to establish a presence and reputation within the Wavemaker and GroupM organisations locally, regionally and globally.
In 12 months:
· With a few projects under your belt, you will be seen as a critical part of the organization, with clients actively requesting more of your time.
· The strategic project of the Wavemaker HK office will have a clear elevation in quality.
· You will be a strategic thought leader a trusted advisor to clients, and a mentor to junior team members.
Key responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership:
- Lead the development of comprehensive media strategies that align with client business objectives and marketing goals.
- Identify key consumer insights and translate them into actionable strategic recommendations.
- Stay abreast of the latest media trends, technologies, and best practices, and proactively share knowledge with the team and clients.
- Champion innovative thinking and challenge conventional approaches to media planning.
- Develop and articulate compelling strategic narratives that resonate with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Client Management:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key client stakeholders, acting as a trusted advisor and strategic partner.
- Present strategic recommendations and campaign performance results to clients in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner.
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance client relationships and expand Wavemaker's scope of work.
- Manage client expectations and ensure that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship:
- Mentor and develop junior members of the strategy team, providing guidance, support, and feedback.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Delegate tasks effectively and ensure that team members have the resources and support they need to succeed.
- Contribute to the overall growth and development of the Wavemaker Hong Kong Strategy Team.
- Data Analysis & Reporting:
- Oversee the analysis of campaign performance data and identify key insights and opportunities for optimization.
- Develop and present insightful reports that demonstrate the impact of media strategies on client business outcomes.
- Utilize data visualization tools to communicate complex information in a clear and compelling manner.
- Ensure that all data analysis and reporting is accurate, reliable, and aligned with industry best practices.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with other Wavemaker and GroupM teams to ensure seamless campaign execution.
- Collaborate with GroupM resources to leverage their expertise and access cutting-edge tools and technologies.
- Partner with external vendors and media partners to identify innovative opportunities and negotiate favorable terms.
- Strategic Leadership:
Desired Skills and Experiences:
· Extensive Media Agency Experience: Proven track record of success in a strategy role within a media agency environment.
· Deep Understanding of Media Landscape: In-depth knowledge of cross-market media market, including traditional and digital channels, audience demographics, and competitive landscape.
· Strong Strategic Thinking & Analytical Skills: Ability to develop and articulate compelling media strategies based on data-driven insights and a deep understanding of consumer behavior.
· Excellent Communication & Presentation Skills: Exceptional ability to communicate complex information clearly and persuasively, both verbally and in writing.
· Client Management Expertise: Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, acting as a trusted advisor and strategic partner.
· Leadership & Mentorship Experience: Experience leading and mentoring junior team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
· Digital Media Proficiency: Strong understanding of digital media channels, including search, social, display, video, and mobile.
· Data Analysis & Reporting Skills: Proficiency in data analysis and reporting, with the ability to extract meaningful insights from campaign performance data.
· Negotiation Skills: Ability to negotiate favorable terms with media partners and vendors.
· Budget Management: Experience managing media budgets and ensuring that campaigns are delivered within budget.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or a related field.
· 8 + years of experience in media strategy, planning, or buying, preferably within a media agency.
· Proven track record of developing and executing successful media campaigns.
· Deep understanding of the media landscape, including digital, traditional, and emerging channels.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
· Experience with media planning and buying tools (e.g., Nielsen, Comscore, Google Analytics, etc.).
· Strong leadership and mentorship skills.
