Job Summary

VIZ Media, the world leader in English-language versions of manga and anime (Japanese comics and animation), is looking for a Mobile Software Developer to join our team!

The Mobile Software Engineer at VIZ Media will work predominantly on our Android apps, to improve and extend the reach of our renowned manga titles and other content to a large and growing user base. This position will play a key role in building and supporting native mobile features, may influence product decisions, and will have opportunities to expand focus across the tech stack.

What You'll Do:

  • Work primarily with Android code and app development ecosystems, maintaining and extending our native apps to support a large, passionate user base
  • Interact with Web APIs to integrate with the rest of our platform
  • Take an individual contributor role in the development of new mobile software and maintenance of current apps, continuously striving to improve the experience for mobile users
  • Work closely with the team to help ensure good software development practice and high-quality code
  • Provide feedback and recommendations about user experience and system performance, especially pertaining to VIZ Media's presence on mobile devices
  • Participate in efforts to share expertise within the company
  • Collaborate with others on the team to help provide our customers with a great entertainment experience

The Ideal Candidate Has:

  • 3+ years of experience of professional software development experience
  • Expertise with native app development for Android platform (Kotlin, Android Studio) - UI/UX development (ConstraintLayout, etc), system design (Activity/Fragment lifecycle, MVVM, LiveData), managing frameworks and build configurations.
  • Experience launching Android apps and maintaining Google Play Store presence (Google Play dev console).
  • Proficiency with a dynamic programming language (Ruby, Python); Rails experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency with SQL.
  • Working knowledge of Web/HTML5 technologies (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
  • Experience with version control systems (Git) and team software development process.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete a technical project independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with computer usage, including email, Internet, and standard software and hardware.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or equivalent experience that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position

Additional skills that will help:

  • Experience developing, testing, shipping, and supporting a product for hundreds of thousands of users
  • Experience with web-app engineering
  • Experience with cloud-based infrastructure (Amazon AWS)
  • Experience as technical lead of a team is a plus!

Work Environment & Schedule

Ideally, the Mobile Software Developer would be local to the San Francisco Bay Area, but we will consider California and New York-based remote candidates. If remote, the Developer should expect to travel a few times a year to VIZ Media headquarters in San Francisco.

Almost 100% of time spent on this job involves the use of a computer. You'll primarily work in an office environment and must be able to use standard office software, equipment, and communication tools. This is a Regular Full-Time position with flexibility in working hours. The Developer may need to work late or on weekends or be on call for occasional urgent issues.
