Description

VIZ Media is looking for a Designer to join our Creative team.

The Designer provides artwork and design support services for VIZ Media products, including Sailor Moon, One Punch Man, and Naruto.

The Designer is a member of the Creative team, which is responsible for the overall visual presentation of VIZ Media graphic novels, tradebooks, DVD packaging, promotional and convention materials, and other such products.

Qualified candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) a MUST
  • Knowledge of multiple page layout and print practices a MUST
  • 3-5 years of experience in a print/publishing environment (books, magazines, layout, etc.) a MUST

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  1. In accordance with guidance provided by internal clients (Editorial, Marketing, PR, Licensing, Sales, etc.) the Designer works on the design and layout for the covers and interior design of graphic novels, tradebooks, DVD packaging, and other VIZ Media print and digital products, promotional, and corporate materials.
  2. Executes changes in art and design and provides recommendations to clients and supervisors for improvements in design strategy
  3. Provides technical support to facilitate VIZ Media work with freelance designers and design studios.
  4. Interacts extensively with colleagues in various departments to facilitate unified approaches to product management and presentation.
  5. Interacts with prepress houses, printers, freelance designers and artists, and computer graphics professionals.
  6. Creates and provides sketches/illustrations for the development and design of VIZ Media products.

In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned

MINIMUM ABILITY, SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) a MUST
  • Strong creative aesthetic sense a MUST
  • Knowledge of multiple page layout and print practices a MUST
  • Experience with Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, HTML and other digital publishing tools a PLUS
  • Knowledge and/or familiarity of the anime and manga industries a PLUS
  • Ability to generate unique and compelling designs while meeting the requirements of editors, producers, sales and marketing personnel
  • Knowledge of effective design strategies, particularly as applicable to the publishing and/or entertainment industries
  • Ability to scan and digitally correct images for color and resolution
  • Ability to successfully interact with prepress houses (both external and internal), ensuring that they meet deadlines and maintain quality of product
  • Proficiency with computer usage, including email, Internet, and standard software
  • Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English
  • Ability to speak, read and write in Japanese a PLUS
  • Ability to pay strong attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse clients, providers, and staff
  • Ability to work effectively in a small organization with an emphasis on teamwork
  • Ability to work legally in the United States
  • Ability to live in/commute to the San Francisco Bay Area

MINIMUM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND EDUCATION

  • 3-5 years of design experience
  • 3-5 years of experience in a print/publishing environment (books, magazines, layout, etc.) a MUST
  • 2-3 years of experience with packaging design STRONGLY PREFERRED
  • 1-2 years of experience with digital publishing a PLUS
  • Equivalent of Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Art, or related fields from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not supervise the work of others, but may give guidance to the work of interns and freelancers.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Approximately 90% of time spent on the job involves use of a video display terminal; therefore, must be able to sit for extended periods and to utilize standard ergonomics practices.  Primarily works in an office environment, requiring the following activity: lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 15 pounds, kneeling, bending. Must be able to use standard office equipment such as copiers and faxes.

OTHER INFORMATION
Employees must adhere to all applicable VIZ Media policies and procedures.  Regular and predictable attendance is required. Willingness and ability to work non-standard business hours, such as nights and weekends, on an as-needed basis is required.  Employees must be able to cope effectively with deadlines and multiple demands.
