The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at UMass Memorial Healthcare is seeking to appoint an Anesthesia Director of Clinical Operations for our Marlborough Campus. Eligible candidates should be Board Certified in Anesthesiology and have an understanding of finance related to health care administration and billing of anesthesia services. In addition, a track record in managing clinical operations and using process improvement methodologies to improve operational effectiveness is required.

The spectrum of clinical anesthesia services delivered at our Marlborough Campus include General-, Orthopedic-, Urologic-, and ENT Surgery, as well as GI Endoscopy, and bronchoscopy cases. The Director of Clinical Anesthesia Operations at the Marlborough Campus will also oversee staffing of the Southborough outpatient Endoscopy Center, in collaboration with the Clinical Vice Chair for the Department.

The anesthesiology medical director of the perioperative program will provide leadership for the surgical/anesthesia/nursing teams in the operating room and will guide the processes for all pre-, intra-, and postoperative aspects of care for patients served by the program. The Anesthesia Medical Director is also responsible for the monthly call schedule and holiday schedule for the year and will oversee the collaboration with the Emergency Department to coordinate the clinical response to difficult airways in the Emergency Room.

In addition to clinical leadership, the anesthesiology medical director’s responsibilities will include quality assurance/quality improvement of all anesthesiology-related activities in the operating room and related areas, utilization review monitoring, and general oversight for the program.  The anesthesiology medical director will also facilitate cohesive, amiable, and productive working relationships among all groups involved in perioperative services – surgeons, anesthesiologists and other physicians; nursing staff; and nursing management.  The medical director will manage conflict among perioperative providers and act as a liaison between administration, nursing and the medical staff. The anesthesiology medical director will make policy recommendations to perioperative program administrators and will serve on the OR Committee and other appropriate committees.

The anesthesiology medical director will be part of the OR Committee to assure an effective operating room program.  All individuals in this group will have specific responsibilities to ensure their part of the program works effectively and joint/team responsibilities to assure all parts integrate effectively to achieve the goals of administration and the medical staff.

 

Position Specifications:

Board-certified anesthesiologist.

Meets requirements for medical staff.

Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other clinical and administrative personnel.

Displays the following attributes:

        Excellent clinician well versed in the full range of anesthetic techniques including regional anesthesia.

        Is respected by all members of the perioperative care team.

        Possesses excellent interpersonal skills.

        Is team-oriented.

        Contributes to the improvement of processes/systems in the operating room.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

A.     Ensures optimal patient outcomes while providing timely care to patients, maximizing efficiency and resources, and minimizing waste.

B.     Monitors and ensures compliance of all aspects of clinical anesthesia operations with federal and state agencies, as well as The Joint Commission.

C.     Assists in the development of key perioperative performance indicators. These should include considerations around cost controls, such as operating room utilization and management of resources, as well as cancellation rate and patient satisfaction with services.

D.     Provides leadership for the operating room team in the daily management of the OR schedule and of patients in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative stages of surgery. 

E.      In collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff and management, establishes protocols for managing patients in all stages of surgery in order to promote high quality and cost-effective delivery of care.

F.      Verifies that staff assignments are in line with the service level agreement, as well as the clinical needs of the patients scheduled for surgical/procedural care.

G.     Participates in developing the policies related to scheduling of operating room cases and non – operating room anesthesia cases.  Monitors and ensures compliance with established practice.

H.     Safeguards the fiscal integrity of the program and joint development of surgeon, anesthesiologist, nursing staff, and patient strategies for operational effectiveness.

I.        Collaborates with the Director of Peri-Operative Services in the development and enforcement of policies and procedures as they relate to anesthesia providers within the OR.

J.        Monitors the quality of anesthesia care rendered throughout the program as established by the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.  This is to include the postsurgical evaluation of additional preoperative patient testing ordered in the holding area and of cancellations of scheduled patients on the day of surgery.

K.     Serves as the Marlborough Hospital Chief of Anesthesiology.
