Description

The Unit Secretary works cooperatively with all members of the health care team in performing clerical and receptionist duties and assists clinical personnel with nonclinical duties.

Department Specific Competencies

Files patient records, lab results and charts.
Maintains patients charts including: ensuring that all documents are properly stamped with correct patient identification ensuring that all necessary forms are located in the chart filing reports disassembling charts and preparing for pick-up by medical records upon discharge of patient assuring that charts of deceased patients are sent promptly to the Nursing Office assisting with 24 hour chart audits
Determines inventory level of forms and unit supplies.
Trains new employees/students in computer applications and clerical duties of the unit.
Maintains a safe working environment by: keeping nursing station and patient care areas free of hazards and clutter alerting appropriate resources of faulty or broken equipment following infection control guidelines including cleaning of surfaces and cabinets at intervals that are determined necessary for maintaining a sanitary patient care environment maintaining current safety updates and BLS initiating appropriate emergency measures as directed recognizing and reporting unsafe acts.
Understands his/her role in maintaining medication security to authorized personnel only.
Completes work left from previous shift and reports any incomplete work at the end of the shift to ensure continuity.
Answers phone and patient call system in a timely manner, uses proper phone etiquette, greets patients, visitors, physicians, and employees; ascertains needs and routes accordingly, takes and relays messages to personnel on the unit in a timely manner, ensures excellent customer service
