SNA International, a world leader in forensics, biometrics and identity intelligence, is currently looking for a Marine Archaeologist.
The Marine Archaeologist will provide professional and scientific leadership to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) personnel working on investigation and recovery missions on a project basis and in regard to processing, analyzing, and managing underwater remote-sensing datasets and geospatial data collected during field missions. This position will follow all DPAA policies and procedures to serve as a scientific-decision maker to create and iteratively execute archaeological strategies to search for, verify, survey, and recover sites in underwater contexts and forensically process any evidence. Investigation and recovery sites (both foreign and domestic) may include remote, isolated, and/or austere environments. This position will require both field and laboratory work.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- A./M.S. or Ph.D. degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field, with a specialization or strong background in underwater archaeology.
- Leadership background required with at least one year of full-time professional experience at the supervisory level in the study of underwater archaeological resources.
- Demonstrated Phase II underwater experience conducting geophysical off-shore surveys
- Demonstrated general Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III experience in the processing of underwater sites and resources.
- At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in general archaeological research, administration or management.
- At least four months of supervisory field and analytic experience in general archaeology.
- Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
- Detail oriented.
- Able to work well independently as well as in a team environment.
- Follow DPAA policies and procedures to serve as scientific-decision maker to create and iteratively execute an archaeological strategy to conduct remote-sensing surveys in search of underwater anomalies and sites, characterize targets, conduct site surveys, excavate sites, and forensically process any evidence.
- Perform processing, analysis, management, and reporting of findings for underwater remote sensing datasets (acoustic and magnetic) and integrate different types of remote-sensing data and managing geospatial data sets.
- Perform to DPAA Laboratory standards to direct and supervise a team of military and civilian personnel, non-governmental partners, and/or host-nation partners in the execution of an established archaeological strategy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of best practices in forensic and archaeological laboratory analysis procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge in designing, directing and supervising all phases of archaeological projects to include Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III archaeological processes, mapping methods and techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge in designing, directing and supervising Phase II geophysical marine remote-sensing surveys (including the use of side scan sonar, magnetometer, and multibeam equipment and methods).
- Ability to design and implement analyses of a variety of materials associated with DPAA’s mandate to identify mission service members from past conflicts, including the Cold War, Vietnam War, Korean Conflict and World War II.
- Expert knowledge of artifact and material evidence analysis to include identifying circumstantial and direct evidence supporting casualty identifications.
- Expert knowledge of forensic laboratory best practices and accreditation standards.
- Ability to provide scientific oversight and documentation of investigations that would search multiple reported overwater aircraft loss incident areas (search areas) for any evidence of aircraft wreck sites.
- Ability to provide guidance and quality control over the collection and analysis of underwater remote sensing data (using towed side-scan sonar and magnetometer, hull-mounted or pole-mounted side-scan sonar, and multibeam echosounder, among other equipment), review and interpret data for detecting anomalies, and to ground-truth/characterize anomalies using divers and/or remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs). Work may involve small surface craft-supported data collection in addition to shipboard operations.
- Ability to collate and manage all collected documentation and data (to include digital remote-sensing data and photographic imagery), and draft report(s) to cover that data, findings, and recommendations. The reporting requirements should follow standard DPAA SOP guidance.
- Ability to provide scientific oversight and documentation of all diving activities, interpretation of findings, and required reporting. If in-water investigation (diving) is warranted or scheduled during a given activity, diving is performed only by divers or other contracted or organic DPAA dive-qualified personnel.
- Ability to write, implement, and follow standard operating procedures.
- Basic knowledge of human remains identification procedures, and comprehensive knowledge of remote-sensing, mapping, probing, coring and test excavation methods/techniques.
- Expert in fundamental spatial concepts for assessing, visualizing and managing data using software, such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Surfer and GoogleEarthPro.
- Knowledge of the recovery and stabilization of human skeletal and dental remains and material evidence from archaeological and other contexts in the field and laboratory.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
- A demonstrated history of initiative and achievement.
- A demonstrated history of working for clients and with client staff providing exceptional customer service.
- Experience working independently with minimal direction or supervision.
- Experience supporting and anticipating client needs and demonstrating problem-solving skills.
- Experience performing tasks under tight deadlines and managing shifting priorities.
