SEWS — Farmington Hills, Michigan Office.  Although located at SEWS – Farmington Hills Office, this is a Hybrid position, which combines both in office and off-site work.  Associates are required to work at least two days in the office each week, but also have the flexibility to work off-site.  
 
 
Basic Purpose:
 
Development of Wiring Harness components (protectors, grommets, holders, etc.) using 3D CAD systems (CATIA V5), releasing 2D drawings of components for quotation and for tooling kick-offs, and adjusting the designs until part/project completion. Requires working with the Wiring Harness engineers of each customer division (primarily Ford, Stellantis, and Toyota), internal Procurement, Validation, QA departments, and external suppliers.
 
 
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
 
  1. Use 3D CAD to develop components for Wiring Harness; requires ongoing packing studies to analyze vehicle fit, while maintaining required clearance from surrounding parts.
  2. Create and check 2D drawings for developed parts using SEWS and Customer standards, and releasing those drawings for production according to the prepared development schedule.
  3. Act as program lead where assigned.  Maintain development schedules in accordance with customer project timing, and assuring that all milestones are met on time for program parts (monitor and advise junior team members).
  4. Working with Wiring Harness engineers to assess the component needs and update the designs throughout the vehicle maturation process (includes both online and in-person meetings the latter of which may require visits to customer sites).
  5. Request quotes via the Procurement team, assist in the supplier selection process, and kick-off of tooling for developed parts.
  6. Work with Suppliers (concurrently with SQA Dept.) to resolve any design or quality issues with the developed components from tooling kickoff until mass production launch; includes visits to suppliers for production trials.
  7. Work with engineers or Japanese parent company to facilitate tooling quotations, tool design sign off, and drawing submissions to customer.
  8. Create and check DFMEA and DVP&R documents for developed parts, in accordance with the requirements of each customer.
  9. Maintain the library of standards of each customer and of Sumitomo, in relation to the scope of parts to be developed, and following those standards.
  10. Prepare test samples, coordination of testing of components as required for each customer, and present the results to the customer engineering sections.
 
 
Qualifications:
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • 6+ years experience with 3D CAD systems (CATIA V5) is required and/or the development of injection-molded parts is preferred; should be able to perform other engineering functions in addition to 3D CAD design.
  • Bilingual (English/Japanese) capability is helpful for liaison work with Japanese parent company.
  • Must be willing to travel for trial events and supplier audits.
  • Some projects need regular communication with overseas contracts and it must be done during non-standard work hours.
