Summary:

The Head of Corporate Communications will be responsible for the strategic development and implementation of Seagen’s global public relations, corporate, program, and pipeline communications, and patient advocacy programs and activities. This position will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Alliances and Communication, and includes regular interaction with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and other executive leadership, providing communications counsel and executing communications initiatives. This person will partner closely with the VP of Investor Relations and the IR team to ensure consistent and aligned external messages and complementary initiatives that reinforce the company’s strategy and opportunities.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, direct and execute strategies and plans to expand and enhance the company’s communications with external stakeholders, including media, online influencers, public, industry and patient advocacy organizations and government agencies that are aligned with and effectively convey Seagen’s vision, goals, opportunities and corporate citizenship
  • Develop and drive a strategic, proactive global corporate communications program that enhances corporate visibility, community awareness, media/social media relations and coverage of the company, its programs and progress
  • Develop relationships with key media outlets and reporters
  • Oversee the Patient Advocacy team and the implementation of a global patient advocacy program that aligns with Seagen’s patient-focused values, enhances corporate visibility, increases awareness of clinical trials and engages organizations relevant to pipeline program therapeutic areas of investigation
  • Oversee product PR and patient identification initiatives intended to support Seagen’s marketed product brands and augment Commercial objectives
  • Oversee pipeline communications strategies and activities intended to convey program opportunities, progress and potential role in the treatment of cancer
  • Serve as primary point of contact and develop plans for engaging with local and national industry organizations and government contacts to properly position Seagen within the biotechnology community
  • Lead efforts to prepare for and manage the company through communications issues; provide strategic counsel to CEO, CFO and other senior executives on such matters
  • Prepare management for presentations and 1x1 discussions with media and other key constituent interactions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members on external-facing materials and events, including branded, medical, industry and research meetings and presentations, to ensure consistency with the company’s disclosure and corporate identity; serve as corporate brand ambassador and provide corporate communications recommendations to help achieve company goals
  • Effectively lead, develop and collaborate with existing communications team members, including product and pipeline communications, media and social media relations, patient advocacy and internal communications. In addition, build effective relationships and collaborate with external agency and colleagues across the organization; identify additional team needs and recruit exceptional talent and/or engage necessary external service providers
  • Present to and/or provide materials to senior management and Board of Directors on corporate communications strategies, tactics and metrics

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 15+ years of corporate communications experience in a publicly-traded healthcare/biotechnology company and/or an PR agency
  • Global experience, working in both the US and European marketplaces
  • Proven ability to speak the language of a biotechnology company and break down complex scientific concepts for external audiences
  • Experience in publicly traded, commercial-stage oncology company desired
  • BA/BS degree required; advanced degree a plus, with preference for MBA (or PhD)
  • Understanding of FDA and other country-specific regulations impacting communications
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven ability to build and maintain relationships with company executives, media, patient advocacy organizations and other internal and external constituents
  • Strategic agility, able to balance proactive/planning with reactive elements of the position
  • Strong executive presence and significant experience working with and influencing senior teams/executives
  • Exceptional verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and a proven ability to motivate and manage communications professionals (internally and externally) to achieve outstanding results
  • Willingness and ability to travel 20-25%
