Job Family: Finance

The Finance organization is responsible for leading and participating in a number of critical functions including: supporting executive management decisions making by analyzing results, assessing strategic alternatives and developing strategic plans; communicating financial results and forecasts with critical stakeholders, including executive management and Board of Directors, shareholders and regulators; managing the Company’s balance sheet, including interest rate and liquidity risks; establishes the Company’s capital policies and prioritizes investments; develops and implements controls to reduce operational risk; developing and maintaining financial data and systems. The Finance organization works across functions and Business lines in the Company, requiring a broad understanding of our business, risk and strategy.

Job Function: Controllership & Tax

The Controllership function is responsible for the operations and controls surrounding accounting, tax and financial reporting of the institution. This function’s responsibilities demonstrates expertise in processing transactions, recording accounting entries, managing the general ledger and reconciliations, and interpreting and complying with technical accounting matters and financial reporting disclosure requirements. Through the Controllership function, stakeholders receive relevant insight and commentary on transaction-level and financial results for analysis and decision making. The Tax function prepares income tax returns and indirect tax filings. Provides research and advice on tax-related matters.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The Director, Controllership develops objectives, goals, accounting and reporting policies, processes, and procedures for the accounting function. S/he sets goals and objectives for team to achieve accounting and reporting requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops and implements accounting objectives, operating policies, and standards in support of the department and functional strategy.
  • Manages and sets the goals and objectives for the Accounting department team members.
  • Influences others through information exchanges and active persuasion to gain cooperation of others.
  • Implements new accounting standard changes and automation of accounting and reporting processes.
  • Manages, motivates, and develops the Accounting department through coaching and challenging opportunities.
  • Ensures policies, practices, and procedures are understood and followed by direct reports and data providers.
  • Develops new objectives, new accounting and reporting policies, processes, and standards.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like; internally and with auditors and regulators.
  • Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the accounting systems, financial reporting and general ledger structure.
  • Ensures the accurate accounting, processing, reporting/disclosures of transactions.


Other Functions:

  • Recruits, trains, develops, motivates, sets goals, and provides on-going feedback to a team of direct reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages subordinate managers and professional staff. Is responsible for the strategic guidance, development and evaluation of employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Santander’s policies and applicable laws.

Requirements:

  • Education -
    • Bachelor's Degree: Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent field.
    • Master's Degree: Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent field.
  • Experience -
    • 9-12 years Relatable experience in accounting, financial reporting or auditing field
    • Experience within the banking or financial services industry
  • Skills & Abilities -
    • Advanced accounting practices and procedures, including US GAAP/IFRS and regulatory reporting standards.
    • Advanced skills in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
    • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of major accounting softwares for both general ledger and regulatory accounting.
    • Ability to direct, train and guide peers, subordinates and management.
    • Ability to handle conflict resolution with other groups to ensure appropriate accounting guidance is followed.
    • Ability to adjust to new developments/changing circumstances.
    • Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with multiple levels of the organizational structure, including senior level management.
    • Ability to maintain and report on confidential information in an appropriate manner.
    • Ability to effectively interact with executive management and vendors.
    • Ability to convey a sense of urgency and drive issues/projects to closure.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequently: Minimal physical effort such as sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Occasional moving and lifting of equipment and furniture is required to support onsite and offsite meeting setup and teardown.
  • Physically capable of lifting up to fifty pounds, able to bend, kneel, climb ladders.
