The 1L Summer Legal Associate will be exposed to a variety of areas of law including corporate, compliance, venture capital investments, and intellectual property in order to provide transactional legal advice and service to the Catalyst Fund and SSIC on venture capital investments, strategic transactions, technology development/commercialization agreements, and complex intellectual property matters.   The successful candidate will take direction as appropriate from key member(s) of the SSIC legal team; and work collaboratively with all members of the SSIC legal and investment teams.   The Summer Legal Associate will research and brief legal issues, review and summarize agreements, and prepare presentations on legal issues ranging from data privacy to foreign investment to export controls to intellectual property.  The role requires an intellectually curious and diligent person who would relish working within a complex, fast-paced global organization with a compelling blend of international cultures and dimensions.


  • Research and prepare presentations on various legal issues and provide recommendations.
  • Review and summarize investment agreements, development/commercialization agreements, and board materials.
  • Draft term sheets and agreements for investments, strategic partnerships and related technology development and commercialization projects;


  • First year law student currently enrolled in a top A.B.A. accredited law school.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in science or engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of law acquired through academic, law firm, in-house or similar institutional exposure.
  • Ability to research legal issues and draft accurate and concise legal memoranda for a business audience.
  • Basic legal writing, verbal and listening skills.
  • Good analytical reasoning skills.
  • Team player with an energetic, positive and proactive attitude.
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to interact with business clients and interdepartmental colleagues locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity applications: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Financial modeling experience a plus.
