R&D Formulation Chemist
Description
The successful candidate has a solid working knowledge of raw ingredients and formulation of personal care products and has a passion to explore and innovate with new raw materials, processing techniques and/or formulations in creative, non-conventional approaches while leveraging current consumer insights and needs. Requires a detail-oriented individual who can manage and organize data on numerous projects. Able to multi-task and problem solve, while maintaining a clear sense of priorities and focus. Must be able to research, interpret and report on technical subjects to both a technical and non-technical audience. Must work well with minimum supervision in the development of a variety of skin care and other products in a timely manner. Works well in a team environment as necessary to track developments, create and/or commercialize new formula prototypes and technologies to support marketing trends and future strategies.
Responsibilities
- Complete general lab duties as needed such as maintaining a clean work area, cleaning glassware, sending out samples for testing, log and storing results.
- Perform storage stability tests for trial compositions and RF products as well as assist in on-going stability testing.
- Perform and summarize experimental designs
- Prepare samples of trial compositions according to directions as specified on worksheets and evaluate product specifications
- Calibrate and maintain lab equipment.
- Follow detailed, technical procedures and maintain appropriate paperwork associated with tasks.
- Represent R&D Function in support of PD, Operations and Purchasing activities.
- Obtain information and raw material samples from RF suppliers.
- Maintain accurate records of trial compositions and observations.
- Evaluate competitive products, RF products and trial compositions according to established procedures.
- Assist in preparing and entering Bill of Materials (BOM) and other electronic forms to support Purchasing, PD and Operations.
- Follow procedures provided by supervisor.
- Train associates in the use of laboratory equipment and procedures
- Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and technical developments.
- Effectively communicate with relevant persons to complete projects using clear, concise language either verbally or written.
- Read, understand and apply SOP / ISO / GLP protocols with regards to: Data generation for Product Registration for submission to Global Regulatory; Agencies.
- Proper operation, standardization & maintenance of lab equipment. Maintaining accurate laboratory notebooks. Following Safety and Good Housekeeping requirements.
Qualifications
- Minimum of BA or BS in chemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent science
- 2-3+ years of previous formulation and product development experience
- Ideal background includes experience in both formulation chemistry and raw material application chemistry
- Knowledge of chemistry, skin biology, raw materials and emulsion technology are desired
- Must have strong problem solving, interpersonal, teamwork, project management and communication skills (oral & written)
- Entrepreneurial attitude with the ability to conceptualize and apply innovative solutions
- Must be a self-starter with a high level of initiative
- Must be flexible, able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work well under pressure
- Ability to use sound judgment in handling unanticipated situations
- Strong analytical chemistry experience is a plus
