The State Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Director (California) is an exciting new, cross-cutting role on the Market Expansion and Policy team which will lead the development of key initiatives geared toward building, strengthening, and maintaining relationships with state elected officials, policymakers and regulators, as well as statewide interest groups and associations, and policy thought leaders throughout the state of California.  In addition, s/he will monitor the policy and political environment for salient and emerging issues and determine those of greatest impact to the company; ensure that the business is informed of state government initiatives and/or policies that may impact the company’s short and long-term initiatives and strategy; drive the strategy and tactics pertaining to the company’s advocacy with state policy makers; and provide the necessary experience and judgment to determine advocacy approaches.

The role will report to the Vice President of Market Expansion and Policy.  Responsibilities will develop and change as needs adjust, but the primary deliverables include:

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Establish and maintain relationships with state elected officials, policymakers and regulators, as well as statewide interest groups and associations, and policy thought leaders within the renewable energy, environment, conservation, housing, economic, and financial services and real estate sectors;
  • Develop and implement government relations strategies to best position Renovate America to leverage policy opportunities in California that will help expand and deepen the company’s presence in its largest market;
  • Manage all relevant state legislative and regulatory activity for the company;
  • Leverage Renovate America’s position as a thought leader in the state, ensuring that the company has a voice in the development of relevant state policy and initiatives;
  • Ensure that internal stakeholders receive timely, accurate and comprehensive information in order to take advantage of policy and political opportunities, mitigate threats, and promote business interests;
  • Keep a close eye on potential reputational risk issues, and maintain close relationships with state leaders to ensure Renovate America’s programs, products, and services are perceived positively within the market;
  • Lend strong political and advocacy experience to the organization and be able to use that experience and judgment in determining which public policy issues are of greatest importance to the company and offer guidance on strategies for managing issues with California stakeholders;
  • Deliver speeches and presentations on behalf of Renovate America; and
  • Manage lobbyists and consultants as needed.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA, MPP, or MPA preferred
  • 7+ years of government affairs, legislative, and/or advocacy experience, with particular knowledge of California policy landscape, required
  • Experience within the technology, energy, or housing sectors preferred experience preferred
  • Facility with complex policy areas and ability to quickly integrate and gain mastery of new industry, regulatory and cross-sectoral market dynamics
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and collaborate successfully with RA leadership and other key members of the Market Development and External Affairs, Marketing, Finance and Capital Markets departments
  • Strong initiative and flexibility to work in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
  • This role will work remotely with extensive weekly travel within Sacramento to meet with key stakeholders and throughout the state of CA as needed, including HQ office in San Diego
