Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller is responsible for daily accounting activites, implementing standardized controls, and reporting policies/procedures for the New York agency. Supervises a team of three accountants through all agency transactions and month-end close procedures.  Supports all key accounts on the balance sheet and profit and loss statement, and provides ad-hoc support/analyses when necessary. Seeks to achieve operational and financial efficiencies within the organization by partnering with key stakeholders both within the agency and externally.

Reports to the Global Controller and Chief Financial Officer

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  • Leads preparation of monthly flash and actual reporting
  • Prepares account analyses and reconciliations including month-end close package
  • Approves journal entries
  • Comparative reporting and explanations vs. the latest budget/forecast and prior year
  • Monthly commentaries
  • Assists Controller in preparation of annual budget and reforecasts
  • Involved in most aspects of transactional processing (purchase orders, invoice approvals, wires, invoice generation,etc.)
  • Supervises intercompany process
  • Establishes “best practices” and implement consistent financial policies and procedures
  • Supports regional and local finance teams (reporting, capex, operations, etc.)
  • Supports WPP reporting as required
  • Supports internal and external audits
  • Provides Ad hoc reports as requested by Global Controller and New York CFO 
  • Leads and participates in the Agency’s Performance Management Process and provides on-going feedback to support recognition and improvements as it relates to employee development

Position Requirements

  •  Bachelor’s degree with an Accounting or Finance with experience working in advertising/media agency preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant or Masters Bachelors Associates is a plus
  • A minimum of 5 years of financial management experience
  • Ability to manage a team of three accountants
  • Strong financial analysis skills and accounting acumen
  • Ability to interact with Senior/Executive Management of the agency, WPP partner agencies, clients, vendors, and other external stakeholders
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  •  Pro-active approach to working
  • Fluent verbal and written English is essential
  • Solid experience with Excel
  • Leverageable experience with Donovan, GEAC, SAP BFC, and Power B1 a plus
