Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital is hiring a Relief Veterinary Assistant to join our incredible Equine Team!
Ideal Candidate:

  • has equine and large animal handling experience
  • has recent experience in a veterinary setting
  • has a high school diploma, or equivalent
  • possesses or is eligible to obtain a Washington State Medication Clerk’s license

  • Must be able to work:
    participate in our on-call emergency rotation
  • able to work at least one holiday per year

Job Overview:

Our Large Animal Veterinary Assistants provide veterinary nursing care to hospitalized animals in the equine/large animal hospital, under the directions of the veterinarians and technicians assigned to the hospital.  Large animal assistants are required to participate in the emergency on-call rotation, which services the large animal hospital.   


  • Handle/restrain patients as needed
  • Admit/discharge hospitalized patients
  • Assist the veterinarians as needed
  • Perform physical exams
  • Prepare patients aseptically for surgical procedures
  • Assist surgical procedures as directed
  • Prepare billing for each surgery assisted
  • Complete daily scheduled treatments
  • Observe animals for changes in clinical status
  • Maintain and monitor intravenous fluid administration
  • Maintain accurate medical records for each patient
  • Assist in dental procedures
  • Assist in radiographic procedures
  • Restrain for endoscopic procedures
  • Draw and process laboratory samples
  • Fill take-home prescriptions as directed by the veterinarian 
  • Perform hospital maintenance in the large animal area

Other skills:

  • Willing to learn new skills
  • Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 lbs
  • Capable of walking and/or standing for long periods
  • May be required to use strength and/or agility in walking and restraining stronger, more active animals

Working Environment

  • Outside work is required
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises as well as bites, kicks and animal wastes
