Event Cyclist (Part-Time)

This position will report to the Manager, Event Staffing & Training, and at events will report to the Event Manager and/or the Area Lead(s).  This position is responsible for providing on-site operational support for NYRR events including the TCS New York City Marathon.

This position is for part-time weekend work only. There are limited opportunities for additional work during race expos at our major events throughout the year.


Major responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the install and maintain flow of a designated area of the course, ensuring the safety of all runners, volunteers, staff, and spectators
    • Area will be assigned by the Course Lead (NYRR Full-Time Staff Member)
  • Provide status updates to the Course Lead and Course Operations Managers, serving as a set of eyes and ears along course during install through load-out
    • Ensure course elements. i.e. Fluid Stations are installed as outlined in the Course Logistics
    • Assist the Race Scoring Team with setup of Timing Systems, if applicable
    • Assist in miscellaneous signage install
    • Look for and report any potholes or safety hazards along the route that could cause harm to runners or impact the runners’ experience
  • Maintain a clear course and oversee the removal of any (unofficial) vehicles, spectators, pedestrians and bikes to provide runners a safe course
  • Act as an official NYRR liaison with NYPD on site with closing and re-opening roads surrounding the course
    • Proper timelines, asks, discussions and protocols will be instructed at the event Staff Orientations, which all staff must attend
  • Account for and return of equipment to NYRR Course Team post-event


Additional Notes & Requirements:

  • Event Cyclists will be provided the proper equipment prior to or on race day to perform all tasks
    • Bicycle and helmet (unless able to provide your own), handheld radios, staff jacket, safety vest, whistle, placard, credential, and any other misc. equipment
  • Must be available for all 5-Borough Series races, including the TCS New York City Marathon
  • Must attend Staff Orientation prior to event days
  • Course Operations experience or equivalent preferred
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to bike or stand for extended periods of time, ranging from 4-16 hours
  • Able to lift equipment greater than 50 lbs
  • Experience working with NYPD/City Agencies (preferred)
  • USATF Official Certification and technical knowledge of road racing (preferred)
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certified (preferred)
