Position Summary:

In coordination with the Controller, and working closely with the Chief Financial

Officer (CFO), the Associate Controller overseas the Garden’s financial

operations, general ledger and controls. The Associate Controller plays an

important role in providing financial management for NYBG’s complex ~$100

million budget which benefits from diverse, revenues including gifts, grants,

contracts, government funding, endowment income and myriad earned income

streams.

 

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

 

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the staff responsible for the Garden’s financial service operations,

including, accounts payable, cash disbursements and general accounting.

Works closely with and supports payroll unit as well.

  • Monitor working capital accounts and forecast Garden’s cash flow position,

ensuring that sufficient funds are available to meet ongoing operational and

capital investment requirements.

  • Maintain banking relationships and oversee all bank reconciliations.
  • Responsible for general ledger maintenance and analysis – work closely with

Controller and the Budget team to prepare various financial analyses,

forecasts and reconciliations.

  • Lead month-end close and support Controller in managing deadlines and

deliverables associated with year-end financial closings and financial

statement preparation.

  • Support all departments in the recording and posting of financial

transactions, including both expense and revenues.

  • Responsible for the preparation and filing of monthly and quarterly sales tax.
  • Prepare and distribute Form 1099-NEC and Form 1098-T.
  • Serve as a back-up for the Controller.
  • Collaborate with other senior management staff on special projects as

required and support executive management in all areas of financial control

and decision-making.

  • As a member of the Garden’s ERP Steering Committee, provide support, input

and recommendations regarding the Garden’s financial software, currently

Unit 4. Work with Director of Financial Systems and IT department to

address issues and implement improvements in the Enterprise Resource

System (ERP), or other related system.

  • With the Controller, review and document accounting designs, policy and

workflows for efficiency and knowledge transfer.

  • Partner with the CFO and Controller on documentation and adherence with

financial risk management procedures and related compliance.

  • Other related duties, as needed.

 

 

Qualifications:

Related qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting and

CPA; five years supervisory level accounting experience within a non-profit

environment; Strong managerial and collaboration skills. Excellent interpersonal,

oral and written communication skills. Strong financial systems background with

experience in process redesign and quality improvement. Proficiency in managing

complex information systems. Excellent analytical, financial management and

reporting skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

The Associate Controller will work with administrative staff in the Budget and

Finance office on a daily basis. This role requires extended time periods in front

of a computer; and working under low to moderate sounds.

Baseline Work Schedule:

The Associate Controller will be required to work Monday through Friday. The

Garden offers alternative work arrangement options whereby employees may

work remotely on some days upon receiving approval from their supervisors.

Salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $150,000-$180,000
