Tour Guide - Part-Time, Seasonal

Green Bank Observatory is accepting applications for the position of Tour Guide. One position will be full-time seasonal and an additional position will be part-time seasonal. $15 an hour
This is a Safety Sensitive Position. Observatory staff are required to be fully vaccinated for Covid 19.

Position Summary

Tour guides communicate the Observatory's mission to the public and provide assistance in creating, organizing, and conducting astronomy/science awareness programs for visitors to the observatory. This is a Safety Sensitive Position. Observatory staff are required to be fully vaccinated for Covid 19.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

- Conduct guided tours, including giving auditorium presentations and driving tour buses.

- Greet guests and provide excellent customer service in order to create a welcoming experience.

- Assist with school field trips and motor coach tours.

- Deliver informal docent programs to the public and youth groups.

- Monitor exhibits and assist with basic troubleshooting.

- Open & close the science center building and exhibit hall as scheduled.

- Assist with janitorial upkeep such as maintaining clean buses throughout the day.

- Assist with stocking the gift shop and covering the register and front desk as needed.

- Other duties as assigned.

 

Tour guides must have a pleasant disposition, excellent communication skills, and patience and tact in working with the public.  They must be comfortable with public speaking and be able to deliver presentations with a professional appearance. A science background, experience interacting with the public, and enthusiasm for public education are key success factors in the performance of this role.

 

 

 

Position Requirements:

 

Minimum Education: High School diploma

 

Preferred Education:  Two years of college with studies emphasizing science or science education.

 

Preferred Experience:  Prior experience working with the public.

 

Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of speaking, frequent standing, walking, and climbing in and out of buses, operation of bus lift, and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.

 

Work Environment: Public facility, office environment, some time spent outdoors; must be available to work evenings and weekends.

 

 

 Required Skills, Certifications:

 

-Age 18 with valid driver’s license

-General computer skills

-Public speaking skills

 

 

Safety Sensitive

The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen.  Failure to pass the Screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
