The Green Bank Observatory (GBO) is seeking a full-time Systems Administrator to join our Information Services team.
Observatory-wide computing is managed by the Information Services division, which oversees operational computing ideas that support the multiple Observatory sites. This includes planning, policy, standards (for software, hardware, and system administration), computer security, allocation of budget, hardware and software support, Web services, telecommunications, computer staff training, inner-site computing travel, procurements, and maintenance contracts.
The Systems Administrator will participate in management of Red Hat Linux and Mac OSX hardware and software systems associated with the Green Bank Observatory including, but not limited to, servers, desktops, and laptops.
The position will be based at our headquarters in Green Bank, WV. In addition to competitive pay, GBO provides excellent paid time off benefits (vacation and sick leave). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Helpdesk triage and ticket resolution or escalation as needed,
- Assisting with hardware and software installation of Linux systems,
- Assisting with organizing and writing documentation, both user and admin facing.
Bachelor’s degree in CS or related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. Candidates with progressively more experience will be considered for a higher level position ranking.
At least two years of systems administration experience, troubleshooting and resolving user problems, in addition to the education requirement above.
Must have strong communication, project management, and negotiation skills. Point of escalation for multiple service technologies. Applied knowledge of supporting a Unix/Linux production environment is required; knowledge of HPC (Linux Clusters/Lustre) as well as high speed WAN/LAN preferred.
This position will normally work in a standard business office environment, occasionally working in an air-conditioned computer room where hearing protection is advised.
- Must be able to lift and move computer equipment weighing up to 42 pounds, and with assistance, lift and move datacenter storage equipment weighing in excess of 40 pounds.
- Must be able to kneel, squat, bend, or crawl in and around office environments to attach or troubleshoot computer and network cabling.
