Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is seeking to support the design and development stage of the Next Generation VLA (ngVLA) project, a radio telescope comprising hundreds of antennae spread across several states and Mexico.  This position will work closely with the ngVLA Project Director and team while reporting to the Deputy Director for the Project Management Division (PMD).  The Systems Engineer III will take a leadership role and serve as a change agent to implement Systems Engineering and Project Management (PM) standards, processes, tools, techniques and support the PMD services in support of the ngVLA project. The Systems Engineer may also assist in other PMD projects as deemed necessary and appropriate. 

 

The position is based at the Science Operations Center in Socorro, NM on the campus of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (www.nmt.edu). Socorro is a small, historical town in the Rio Grande Valley, 75 miles south of Albuquerque. In addition to competitive pay, NRAO provides excellent paid time off benefits (vacation and sick leave). Job Duties Summary

The Systems Engineer III will report directly to the Deputy Director of the PMD and will matrix to the ngVLA Project Director. The successful candidate will implement appropriately tailored systems engineering for the ngVLA project and all associated work for others associated with the effort. Responsibilities and duties:

  • Systems Engineering of ngVLA Project. Oversees all phases of projects from inception (studies) through development and design to implementation with a view towards whole life cycle management.
  • Strong collaboration with ngVLA Project Manager required. Liaison with all departments, including engineers, computer scientists, and science staff.
  • Monthly, quarterly and annual reporting as associated with systems engineering responsibilities.

 

Work Environment

Work is typically conducted in an office environment.  Some travel, less than 25% (including international), may be required.

 

Position Requirements:

 

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, management or a related field

 

Minimum Experience

Minimum of ten years direct experience in systems engineering

 

Preferred Experience

Five years’ experience project management preferred but not required

 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

PMI CAPM (or higher) certification and INCOSE ASEP (or higher) certification preferred. Both may be obtained within the first 1 year of employment upon PMD Director Approval.

 

Competency Summary

High level of competency in Microsoft software products and web-based systems, Visio and SharePoint. Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
