Technical Trainee - Green Bank Observatory Electronics Division
Initial 6 Month appointment

The Technical Trainee will join the Green Bank Observatory Electronics Division and rotate within the division for trainee activities. The Trainee will also be trained in basic electronics technician support activities.

SUMMARY

Under regular supervision, performs assignments of a technical nature.  These duties will be explicit and designed to provide a strong technical learning experience to the recipient.  Assignments will become progressively more complex. 

 

The Technical Trainee will join the Green Bank Observatory Electronics Division and rotate within the division for trainee activities. The Trainee will also be trained in basic electronics technician support activities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs assembly/wiring duties as assigned.
  • Assisting with hardware and software installation
  • Demonstrates the ability to use appropriate hand tools
  • Performs routine maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Assists other members of the department as directed.
  • Ability to work from blue prints or sketches beneficial.
  • Proactive compliance with Observatory and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
  • Others duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED is required; some related experience is preferred.  The ability to read and interpret manuals is required.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Must be able to perform simple mathematical calculations.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

A technical trade certification or Engineering degree is preferred.

 

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS, NATURE OF THE WORK

Work typically takes place in an office environment, but employees may be occasionally required to work elsewhere.  Will be required to stand and sit; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands or arms.   Occasionally is required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch.  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and use server lift. Must be able to communicate clearly and in writing.  Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to wear climbing harnesses and perform work in high altitudes.

Safety Sensitive

The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment/pre-placement drug screen.  Failure to pass the Screen will disqualify the candidate from employment consideration for a period of six months from the date of the results.
