Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) encourages anyone with an interest in a career in Information Technology to apply for a full time onsite Systems Administrator position located in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In addition to technical skills, the ability to work within a diverse team and have strong interpersonal and organizational skills are also requirements for this role.

Job Duties Summary
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Assist users in accessing desktop systems
- Provide basic instruction and/or training to users for established IT services
- Perform routine technical assistance on Windows/Mac systems
- Assist with tracking available inventory of hardware ready to be deployed
- Performs data entry and maintenance of records such as, but not limited to, project documents, user instructions, general reports and/or documentation
- Assist in the IT equipment purchasing process
- Performs routine technological systems support, maintenance, and testing
- Assists with the implementation of technology projects with moderate scope and impact
- Assists with the installation, standard configuration, and maintenance of computers
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Work Environment
Work is typically performed in a research or development environment.
Additionally, occasional travel, once permitted by Observatory policies and CDC guidance, may be required, e.g., visits to other NRAO/GBO sites, or conferences.
Position Requirements:
Minimum Education
Associates degree in computer science or a related field is required or the combination of education and experience.
Preferred Experience
- General interest in enabling access to information technology
- Professional customer service and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of Office productivity software; word-processor, spreadsheets
- Willingness to learn user support/helpdesk processes
- Basic troubleshooting skills with willingness to ask for help when needed
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain performance while managing competing priorities
- Ability to communicate and work alongside staff in a professional manner
Competency Summary
Work requires strong communications and customer service skills. General knowledge of IT processes and best practices are desired. Must have good troubleshooting skills in defining and resolving problems and good technical writing/documentation abilities.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits at a desk, uses a personal computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment; the ability to climb stairs is required. The employee is required to bend, reach, and must have finger dexterity. The employee is required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. May occasionally work at high altitudes. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
