Part-Time General Office Assistant II

Position Description:


Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) has an opportunity for a part-time, 16-hours per week, General Office Assistant II. The office assistant will provide administrative and logistical support to the NRAO Archives, with preferred workdays being Tuesday and Wednesday; at least half of the hours worked must be on one of these two days. The position is based at our headquarters in Charlottesville, VA on the grounds of the University of Virginia (


Job Duties Summary:

  • Using Excel, create inventory listings of folder titles for boxes NRAO documents and of papers donated by scientists to the Archives
  • Assist in sorting and organizing documents as part of archival processing workflow
  • Type oral history interviews to digitize (from typescript to Word)
  • Digitize audio tapes
  • Scan and digitize photographs, negatives, and documents
  • Extend and complete Excel spreadsheet index of 27,900 b&w negatives
  • Other duties as assigned



Position Requirements:


Minimum Education

High School Diploma or equivalent required.


Minimum Experience

Two years of related responsible office support experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.


Preferred Experience 

Some experience working in libraries or archives is preferred, but not required.


Competency Summary: The successful candidate must possess strong organizational, verbal and written communications skills, be detailed-oriented, and be able to manage, schedule, and complete tasks independently. Successful candidate must demonstrate a high level of professionalism.  Must have experience with all standard Microsoft Office software.
