Come join the world's leading Radio Astronomy Observatory.  The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is actively recruiting an Animator/ Illustrator for the Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team at Observatory Headquarters in Charlottesville, VA. EPO is the Observatory-wide function designing and delivering accessible and engaging radio astronomy programs and products for the general public, K-12 students, formal and informal educators.

 

Position Summary

The EPO Animator/Illustrator Leads develops and delivers animation and/or illustration projects in collaboration with subject matter experts and other members of the EPO team.  The successful candidate will use scientifically informed observation, combined with technical and aesthetic skills to accurately portray subjects to support EPO products such as public website, press releases, public exhibits, and K-12 STEM educational programs. The incumbent will use independent judgment and creativity to create specialized, informative and engaging visual content in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and other members of the EPO staff.   

 Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Illustrative duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Creates 3D/2D animations and motion sequences depicting natural phenomena or illustrating processes, using illustration, animation, and compositing tools.
  • Creates illustrations, informative graphics, scientific visualization via a range of media and techniques
  • Creates educational video products.
  • Supports story development through the creation of storyboards.
  • Renders/Outputs versions of animations and/or illustrations in formats needed by the various distribution channels employed by the observatory’s EPO effort.
  • Responsible for development and upkeep of effective processes for archiving and cataloging of completed projects.
  • Pro-active compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Competencies: 
  • A solid grounding in basic science education, intellectual curiosity about science, and comfort with scientific ideas is essential
  • Proven design and illustration skills
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and a good communicator
  • Basic knowledge of statistical data visualization
  • Experience building data-driven charts, maps, and 3D modeling
  • Ability to work closely with editors, writers, and scientists
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously, including long-term and daily assignments
  • Ability to visualize complex ideas in a clear, accurate, and intelligent manner
  • Ability to work as a team member toward the achievement of team goals.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Education:  Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Preferred Education:  Bachelor's Degree in astronomy, physical science, or a related field is preferred.  

Minimum Experience:  Three years of multimedia experience.

Preferred Experience:  Prior work experience in a scientific research environment is preferred. 

Computer Skills:  Computer-based image processing, illustration and artistic design, video editing. Microsoft Office, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, FITS Liberator

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

 

Nature of Work:  

Typically, works in an office environment and occasionally outdoors or in and around noisy equipment.

 

Physical Requirements:  

Typically Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of weight frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.  When filming, required to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.  Vision (Near, Color, Depth Perception).
