Position Description:

 

Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is recruiting for a full time Systems Administrator within the Information and Technology division at their headquarters in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Systems Administrator, under general supervision, will support access to and updates of production Information Services for the Linux platform in a heterogeneous (Linux/Mac/Windows) environment. This position will also contribute to the NRAO Common Computing Environment (CCE) to ensure good alignment and communications between sites.

 

We are especially interested in individuals capable of a wide systems view, with solid scripting skills in perl and bash, and a strong focus on automation with configuration management systems such as Ansible. The position will support, in addition to the normal set of I.T. services such as email, DNS, DHCP, Database support, Virtualization, etc., a variety of applications such as (but not limited to) JIRA, Gitlab/Mattermost, NextCloud, Nagios, Wordpress, and central backups. Experience with RedHat Linux is highly desired, and exposure to directory services such as NIS, RedHat IdM, and Windows Active Directory will be of considerable benefit. Hardware experience with shared network attached storage systems would be a plus.

Job Duties Summary

  • Maintenance of key Linux servers and services, including email, DNS, DHCP, NIS, web, MySQL, KVM, nagios;
  • Maintenance of key web applications and servers, including Atlassian services, gitlab/mattermost, wordpress, nagios, and internally developed dashboards;
  • Management of storage systems including SAN/NAS appliances;
  • Development and maintenance of automation, both programmatic (bash, perl) and declarative (Ansible);
  • Participate in Information Security Office activities as needed;
  • Management of backup systems (Archiware, BackupPC);
  • Triages ticket assignments based on judgment/time allocation; resolve tickets or escalates as needed.
  • Addition to and maintenance of extensive library of documentation, both user facing and system oriented;
  • Performs and/or assists with hardware and software installation, including virtualization;
  • Investigates, deploys, and/or assists in the deployment of new technology software, and systems upgrades;
  • Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Work Environment

Work is typically performed in a research or development environment.

 

While the position may permit some telecommuting, a minimum of 2 full working days physically present in the Charlottesville office is required.

 

Additionally, occasional travel, once permitted by Observatory policies and CDC guidance, may be required, e.g., visits to other NRAO/GBO sites, or conferences.

 

Position Requirements:

 

Minimum Education

A Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field is required or the combination of education and experience.

 

Minimum Experience

Two to four years of systems administration experience with networks and systems comparable to those of the Observatory is required.

 

Competency Summary

Work requires strong knowledge of Linux system administration, data management and general IT processes and best practices. Requires strong interpersonal and communications skills. Must have good troubleshooting skills in defining and resolving problems and good technical writing/documentation abilities.

 

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently sits at a desk, uses a personal computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment; the ability to climb stairs is required. The employee is required to bend, reach, and must have finger dexterity. The employee is required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. May occasionally work at high altitudes. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
