Position Description:


Responsible for developing and executing public awareness campaigns and increases public engagement with the Green Bank Observatory through all available mediums.  Responsible for day-to-day operations of Science Center including gift shop and exhibit hall.  Designs tours, and special events and trains tour guides.  Responsible for cordial visitor interactions. 



  • Plans, develops and directs marketing campaign efforts to promote the Green Bank facilities, telescope(s), and radio science awareness. 
  • Conceptualizes strategic marketing, social media, and branding initiatives and implements details of such campaigns. 
  • Develops brand standards and usage guidelines ensuring consistent branding efforts.  Develops media resource kits.
  • Manages gift shop operations including merchandise selection, inventory control, point of sale system, and personnel. 
  • Oversees science center exhibit materials supply and equipment inventory, develops appropriate educational and promotional materials, and sets tour pricing. 
  • Designs and implements tour guide training program and develops new tour products and offerings in response to public interest. 
  • Manages, trains, and evaluates science center personnel. 
  • Determines science center operational hours and schedules tour guides and gift shop personnel to cover all operational hours. Coordinates with Site Facility Administrators in the scheduling of Café and custodial personnel.
  • Ensures subordinate personnel and others are trained on gift shop procedures, tour scheduling and ticket sales, reservations, public interaction procedures and techniques, and opening/closing of facilities.
  • Assists Education Officer with scheduling and delivering of educational programs, activities, and special events. 
  • Approves and supervises reservation requests for facility reservations and special tours. 
  • Regularly reviews the status of building, exhibits, classrooms, bus fleet, and gift shop.  Coordinates and reports to site administration as needed, requests assistance for repairs and other needs as they arise.
  • Responsible for facility, advertising and labor budgets.  Maintains records on operations including gift shop and Café revenues and expenditures, educational expenditures and visitation records.  Compiles and analyzes marketing data. 
  • Prepares, submits, and reports on grants.  
  • Proactive compliance with GBO and government safety policies and procedures in own work area is expected.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Position Requirements:

Minimum Education:  Requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in the hospitality field. 

Minimum Experience:  Minimum of five years of experience in brand management and retail operations. 

Competencies:  Knowledge of museum or science center work environment.  Requires good communication skills and ability to work well with the general public and groups.  Demonstrated ability to work with Point of Sale (POS) equipment and other computer programs and ability to train others in those skills.  Ability to maintain accurate records of materials received, materials sold, and of revenue received.  Able to do physical inventory and required documentation of same.


Additional Requirements:   A valid driver’s license. 


Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee uses a cash register, personal computer, telephone, photocopier, facsimile and other standard office equipment.


Physical Demands:  The ability to climb stairs is required.  The employee may occasionally drive a vehicle, lift and/or move up to 11-25 pounds overhead frequently, 26-50 pounds infrequently.  Requires the agility and mobility to stock merchandise and escort groups on the facility grounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to focus.  May require a non-standard work week and/or may need to work weekends or days not normally scheduled.
