Position Description:

 

Position Summary

The Education Specialist assists the Division Head in designing, funding, and implementing formal and informal education programs, communicates Green Bank Observatory activities including science discoveries and actively participates in execution of the EPO strategic plan at the Green Bank Observatory.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Develops formal education, informal education, and professional development programs related to STEM, astronomy, radio astronomy and the Green Bank Observatory for K-12 teachers and students.
  • Designs, develops, and creates outreach materials such as blogs, articles, online educational materials for use by students and educators.
  • Plans and coordinates educational events such as Open House and Science Fair.
  • Plans and coordinates large funded programs
  • Actively contributes in EPO short and long-term planning, program development, and reporting.
  • Assists in seeking external funding to further develop the EPO program portfolio.
  • Compiles evaluation metrics and feedback to measure program impact.
  • Provides grant support to Division Head.
  • Others duties as assigned.

 

 

Position Requirements:

 

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in astronomy, physical science, science education, or a related field is required. Enthusiasm for astronomy education is required.

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in astronomy, physical science, science education, or a related field preferred. 

Minimum Experience: One year of experience in science/math teaching, or science related outreach is required. 

Preferred Experience:  Classroom teaching at the K-12 or undergraduate level or instructional experience in an informal or museum setting in STEM is preferred. Work experience in independently managing educational programs is highly preferred. Experience in collaborative team work is preferred. 

Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking; and the ability to communicate comfortably and effectively with scientists, the public, educators, students, senior managers, and the media. Must excel at working in a collaborative team-based environment.  Must be able to work across departments at the Observatory on new initiatives. Must understand astronomy, the research process, and inquiry-based education and have a good working knowledge of personal computers, social media, multimedia applications, and office software such as MS Office.

Other: Occasional domestic travel is required. May work up to two weekends/month. Must be able to work a varied flexible work schedule.
