Your Challenge:

nLIGHT is searching for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to assist in the development of cutting-edge laser and electro-optical systems within our Directed Energy Development Group.  The position calls for Opto-Mechanical design experience within a multidisciplinary team with the focus on supporting production and new product introductions of complex electro-optical systems.

Job Summary

  • Manage complex tradeoffs that span multiple functional areas to realize the best possible product.
  • Contribute to a cross-functional team pursing the development and production of novel fiber laser design participating in NPI transitions, developing processes, improving part designs, and providing tooling design support. 
  • Involvement in all technical details of product life cycle – ranging from initial designs to volume production issues to end of life management.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and apply sound mechanical engineering judgement in production related concerns, provide engineering drawing updates to resolve issues.
  • Change and update bill of materials for production, ensuring proper consumption of materials. 
  • Plan and execute design verification test protocols including environmental and accelerated life testing, qualify new design changes and materials.
  • Oversee and participate in the procurement and assembly of engineering and prototype builds.
  • Devise, design and build robust tooling and process equipment suitable for reliable high-volume manufacturing. 

Qualifications

  • Self-directed possessing excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of BS degree in mechanical engineering or comparable and at least 1-5 years of experience in a mechanical engineering role.
  • Experience with various manufacturing techniques – machining, sheet metal, injection molding, etc.
  • Have a good understanding of material properties for metals, plastics, adhesives, and glass as well as the different coatings and finishes.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and engineering drawing practices including tolerance analysis and working understanding and ability to apply GD&T per ANSI Y14.5M
  • Candidate shall be able to write clear and concise procedures and processes and be able to clearly communicate with engineering and technicians. 
  • Experience using Solidworks PDM systems for data management and ECO process.

Exceptional candidates will have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Environmental/mechanical qualification testing for military applications.
  • Development of high-power laser and optical assemblies.
  • Detailed understanding of precision opto-mechanical design and fine mechanisms
  • Experience with fiber optics

Salary, level based on experience, education and skills:

  • Mechanical Engineer I: $75,000 - $86,000
  • Mechanical Engineer II: $80,000 - $93,000
