Executive Producer, Local News Podcasts

The nation’s largest public radio station and a pioneer in on-demand audio is hiring an Executive Producer to help create and lead a next-generation podcast, with the goal of reaching new audiences with essential local news aimed at helping make New York City work for the people who live here. 

This leader will be tasked with designing a process and hiring a team that will produce the definitive, on-demand audio product serving millions of listeners across the NYC metro region. The right candidate possesses sharp storytelling instincts and excellent news judgment. They are a self-starter who displays enthusiasm, imagination and creativity. They are willing and able to get involved in all aspects of show production, from idea development to episode structure to editing. They are strongly collaborative. They are innovative and inspire others to push the boundaries of storytelling. They are a fair, supportive and inclusive people manager. This position reports to the Director of Audio Strategy.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, design and pilot a creative and engaging local news podcast that engages audiences across New York City and the surrounding regions
  • Design systems to solicit feedback and input from the WNYC newsroom and the broader New York Public Radio community  
  • Launch and iterate the podcast based on performance indicators and audience feedback
  • Recruit, hire and manage a talented, friendly and diverse team of journalists to produce the podcast
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of both the local news podcast and the Consider This podcast, including story selection, assignments, staffing, budgets and other resources
  • Lead communication with newsroom staff and other editorial teams around bookings, assignments, productions needs and deadlines
  • Collaborate with the host(s) to generate ideas for guests and segments; work together to structure and edit show scripts
  • Longer term, collaborate with various editorial leaders to conceive of and execute other on-demand offerings that build on the newsroom’s work
  • Work with other departments including engineering, marketing, publicity and membership to ensure the podcast is of the highest quality and to increase its reach
  • Model a change-positive leadership and ensure the team is managed with respect and kindness
  • Invest in each team member’s professional development by focusing on goal setting, skills acquisition, and career pathing

 Qualifications & Skills

  • At least 7 years of audio journalism experience, including producing and/or editing podcasts, and 3 years of people management experience required 
  • Impeccable journalistic integrity and editorial judgment
  • Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Proficient in the use of audio editing software
  • Ability to effectively manage several projects concurrently
  • Sophisticated understanding of podcasting and the broader digital audio landscape, including applicable metrics, relevant audience trends, market forces and audience engagement techniques 
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in newsrooms
  • An entrepreneurial and collaborative spirit with coworkers inside the newsroom and in other departments
  • Familiarity with New York City news, issues, trends and geography
  • The ability  to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff members at NYPR
  • Proven track record of being a strong leader who embodies the mission and values of the newsroom

This is a full-time role that includes benefits. New York Public Radio offers competitive compensation with excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal, sick time and parental leave.

This role is currently operating remotely, with the ability to optionally work from the office/studio sometimes, which is encouraged. However, this position is not a permanent remote position and is part of the New York City staff and may be expected to work from the New York office in a hybrid capacity within the next few months. 

Given this role will be on-site all or some of the time, being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 is required unless NYPR has approved a specific religious or medical exemption in advance of the first day of work. At this time, NYPR defines being fully vaccinated as having received two Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations or one Johnson & Johnson vaccination.
